Forgotten Realms Creator Making New Dungeons and Dragons Books

Fantasy author Ed Greenwood is partnering with Mythmakers to launch RealmsBound, a new series of books set in the popular Dungeons & Dragons world of the Forgotten Realms. The series will begin in 2026 with four books focused on the Dalelands, and each year will explore a different region of the Forgotten Realms with rich detail.

The Forgotten Realms is a hugely popular world in Dungeons & Dragons. From the frozen lands of Icewind Dale to the bustling city of Waterdeep, the continent of Faerun (located on the world of Toril) has served as the backdrop for countless adventures. You can find it in books, video games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Neverwinter, the movie Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and adventure modules like Tyranny of Dragons and The Legend of Drizzt. Recently, two new D&D books, Forgotten Realms: Adventures in Faerun and Heroes of Faerun, have further expanded this beloved setting.

The creator of the popular Forgotten Realms setting for Dungeons & Dragons, Ed Greenwood, is launching a new series of interconnected books called RealmsBound. Working with Mythmakers Studio, the series will delve into different areas of Faerun over several years. The first four books, scheduled for release in 2026, will focus on the Dalelands.

  • Adventures in the Dalelands

As a longtime Forgotten Realms fan, I’ve always loved the Dalelands. They were one of the earliest areas created by Ed Greenwood, and honestly, they feel really classic. It’s this collection of small towns, but it’s packed with history. So many important characters came from there! You’ve got Elminster – you might recognize him from Baldur’s Gate 3, he even looks a bit like Greenwood himself! – plus Storm, Anastra, Jander Sunstar, and even Mystra, the Goddess of Magic, who used to go by Midnight. It’s a seriously important place in Faerûn lore.

Gary Gygax started creating the world of the Forgotten Realms when he was a child in the 1960s. He later used it as the backdrop for his Dungeons & Dragons games, shared it with fans in The Dragon magazine, and ultimately sold the rights to TSR for $5,000 with the understanding that they would publish his books.

The Forgotten Realms and Faerûn are only a small part of the larger world of Toril, leaving plenty of opportunities for future adventures in the RealmsBound series. Will Greenwood take us to places like the kingdom of Cormyr, the jungles of Chult, the land of Thay, or even the distant continent of Kara-Tur? We’ll have to wait and see! Meanwhile, Dungeons & Dragons is heading to a new setting called Eberron with the release of Eberron: Forge of the Artificer, which is currently available for D&D Beyond Master Tier subscribers and will be released publicly on December 9th.
