Satya Nadella says we’ve moved beyond simply experimenting with new technologies and are now seeing them become widely adopted. We’re starting to see what’s truly valuable and lasting, versus just hype. While we now have a better understanding of where technology is going, the bigger challenge is figuring out how to use it responsibly and for the benefit of everyone.
We’re still early in the process, much like the beginning of a marathon, and a lot is still uncertain. Right now, technology is advancing faster than our ability to apply it effectively, and there are several key things we need to focus on to ensure success.
Nadella argues we need to move past debates about simple versus complex AI and instead focus on understanding how humans think and interact when using tools that boost our cognitive abilities. Essentially, we need a new understanding of how our minds work in this new technological landscape.
He argues that we must carefully decide how to introduce this technology globally, using it to address challenges facing both people and the environment. For AI to gain public trust, it needs to demonstrate tangible, positive results in the real world. Where we focus our limited resources – energy, computing power, and skilled people – will be crucial, and we need to reach a broad agreement on these priorities.
It’s not surprising that Microsoft’s CEO, Nadella, is a strong advocate for AI. The company has been laying off tens of thousands of employees over the last three years while simultaneously increasing its investment in artificial intelligence.
These days, it’s hard to use Microsoft products without encountering AI features, with Microsoft Copilot leading the way.
2026 will likely continue to be a big year for AI, but rising costs for essential hardware like RAM and GPUs are raising concerns about how quickly AI development can progress and how much it will ultimately cost.
