Pokemon Fan Gets Incredible Surprise After Opening 25-Year-Old Time Capsule

A Pokemon enthusiast recently made an incredible discovery while opening a time capsule buried for over 20 years – sealed packs of the original Base Set trading cards. Pokemon became a global phenomenon after its release in the late 1990s, quickly becoming one of the most successful entertainment franchises ever. Over nine generations of video games, a hugely popular trading card game, and countless other products, Pokemon has generated billions of dollars. The Pokemon Trading Card Game, in particular, features some of the most sought-after and valuable collectibles in the entire franchise.

As a long-time Pokémon fan, it’s amazing to see how huge the trading card game has become! For almost thirty years, the Pokémon TCG has been a great place for both collecting and battling. They’re always releasing new sets – like the recent Phantasmal Flames and the upcoming Ascended Heroes – with cards everyone wants. And older sets just keep going up in value as they become harder to find. Recently, someone got incredibly lucky! They opened a time capsule from 26 years ago and found some seriously valuable Pokémon packs inside. It’s finds like that that make being a collector so exciting!

Pokemon Fan Finds Expensive Packs in Old Time Capsule

A Reddit user named Kuja_4040 recently shared an amazing discovery on the Pokemon TCG subreddit. They found three unopened packs of Pokemon cards from the very first Base Set while going through a family time capsule from the year 2000. The packs were still in their original packaging and featured artwork of both Blastoise and Charizard. Interestingly, the packaging also showed an older Wizards of the Coast logo, a detail from the early days of the Pokemon TCG. Kuja_4040 plans to keep the packs sealed and add them to their collection rather than opening or selling them.

The recent discovery of a valuable Pokémon collection is especially remarkable when you consider how much early Pokémon trading card packs are worth. Sealed packs from the first edition, known as the Base Set, regularly sell for over $1,000 on eBay. This set contains some of the most sought-after and expensive cards ever printed, like the Charizard card, which can be worth thousands of dollars if it’s in good condition. Many fans have also speculated that heavier packs might contain more valuable holographic cards, making them worth even more.

Pokemon’s Base Set Has Achieved Iconic Status

The original Pokémon Trading Card Game Base Set remains incredibly influential, and The Pokémon Company frequently revisits it with new releases. A prime example was the 2016 “XY – Evolutions” expansion, which brought back many cards from the Base Set, including a new Charizard. The 2021 “Celebrations” set also reprinted beloved holographic cards from the original set in its “Classic Collection,” featuring the final evolved forms of the Kanto starters, Pikachu, and Professor Oak. With another major anniversary approaching, fans can likely anticipate even more nostalgic content in the future.

In 2026, the world of Pokémon will celebrate its 30th anniversary on February 27th! The Pokémon Company is planning a big celebration to mark this milestone. Fans can expect the first announcements about the next generation of Pokémon games – the 10th generation – around the annual Pokémon Day livestream early in the year. A special, nostalgic release for the Pokémon Trading Card Game is also anticipated, continuing a tradition of commemorative sets released during major anniversaries. With three decades of success under its belt, Pokémon has a lot in store for its fans!
