Pokemon GO Fan Gets Incredibly Rare Piplup During Community Day Event

A lucky Pokémon GO player found a rare, shiny Piplup during a recent Community Day event. In Pokémon GO, Pokémon vary in how hard they are to find, depending on things like their stats and different versions. Shiny Pokémon are especially prized by players, and Pokémon with a high 4-star rating are considered the most powerful. Community Day events give players a better chance to catch specific Pokémon like Piplup.

Pokémon GO regularly hosts Community Days, which focus on a specific Pokémon each month. These events significantly increase the number of times that Pokémon appears in the game, and also make it easier to find its rare, shiny version. This January, Pokémon GO is holding two Community Days: one featuring Piplup on January 4th, and another with Grookey on January 18th. Recently, a player shared an especially lucky discovery they made during the Piplup event.

Pokemon GO Fan Catches “Shundo” Piplup During Community Day

A Reddit user named fantasypaladin shared an incredible discovery on the official Pokemon GO subreddit: a shiny Piplup with perfect stats! This Piplup isn’t just rare because of its color and power, it also has a special background that was only available during the January Community Day Classic event. The user explained they caught this perfect Piplup – often called a “shundo” – by completing one of the event’s Research tasks, rather than finding it randomly in the game. While these special backgrounds are usually hard to get from wild encounters, other players noted that certain paid missions guarantee them.

The post’s comments were full of fans congratulating the original poster and sharing pictures of their Piplups from Community Day. Some people shared stories of unlucky catches, showing Piplups with very low stats, even a Shiny one! Others bragged about catching lots of Shiny Piplups, but still hadn’t found a perfect one. The special research tasks during the Community Day also guaranteed at least three chances to catch Piplups with a special background.

Pokemon GO Has a Busy Schedule for January 2026

Alongside the Piplup Community Day, another event is coming in January! This time, the spotlight is on Grookey, the Grass-type Starter Pokemon from Generation 8. Players will have a better chance of finding and catching Grookey during the event. If you evolve Grookey all the way to Rillaboom, it will learn a special, powerful attack called Frenzy Plant. The Grookey Community Day in Pokemon GO will take place on January 18th from 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. in your local time.

As part of the new year celebrations, Pokemon GO is planning several events in January. A new event called ‘Pinch Perfect’ will introduce Klawf, a Pokemon from the ninth generation, and give players a chance to find a shiny Dhelmise. Early in January, a special Raid Day will feature Kyurem, including its Black and White forms, alongside Reshiram and Zekrom. Throughout January 2026, Pokemon GO will host events highlighting popular Legendary Pokemon, new additions, and beloved Starter Pokemon.
