PSA: Nintendo Fans Are Running Out of Time to Purchase Game Vouchers

As a Switch owner, I just got a reminder from Nintendo that I only have a little under three weeks left to snag those Game Vouchers! After January 30th, they won’t be available anymore. The good news is, if you buy them before then, you’ll still have a whole year to redeem them for some awesome select games on your Switch. Definitely a heads-up for anyone planning to use those vouchers!

Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers are a way to get a discount on select first-party games. They cost $100 for a pair and you need an active Nintendo Switch Online membership to purchase and redeem them. Using vouchers lets you save $10 on each of two $60 games. However, they can’t be used on games designed for the new Switch 2 console. You can still use them on original Switch games that have upgrade options for the Switch 2, like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and then purchase the upgrade separately.

Nintendo Switch Users Are Running Out of Time To Buy Game Vouchers

Nintendo is letting Switch owners know that they’ll soon no longer be able to buy Game Vouchers. These vouchers can be used to download select games from the Nintendo eShop, but the program is ending soon. Nintendo started sending reminder emails on January 9th, stating that purchases will no longer be available after January 30th at 11:59 PM Pacific Time. This follows an earlier announcement in July that the program would be discontinued. While these vouchers won’t work for games on the future Nintendo Switch 2, any vouchers you’ve already purchased will remain valid for a year from the date of purchase. So, if you buy vouchers on or before January 30th, you’ll have until the end of 2026, and even into 2027, to redeem them.

Now that Nintendo has stopped selling Switch Game Vouchers, the games you can redeem them for likely won’t change. Players shouldn’t expect new releases, like the next Pokemon generation, to be available with vouchers. Without this voucher program, Switch and future Switch 2 owners will have a harder time finding discounts on Nintendo’s own games. Nintendo fans should watch for sales on both physical and digital games from now on.

The Death Game Vouchers Has Unfortunate Timing

As a big Nintendo fan, I’m a little worried about a couple of things happening right now. They’re ending the Game Voucher program soon, and that’s frustrating because it was a great way to get games cheaper. On top of that, there’s a shortage of computer memory chips (RAM) that’s driving up prices for everything. I’m concerned this could mean Nintendo might have to raise the price of the Switch 2, even though it just launched for $449 in June 2025. They’ve increased prices before due to tariffs, and honestly, sales weren’t amazing over the holidays last year. If they raise the Switch 2 price and get rid of the vouchers, I think a lot of fans might hesitate to buy. There’s no sign of this RAM shortage getting better, so it’s hard to say what Nintendo will do, but I’m hoping they’ll find a way to keep things affordable.

Nintendo Switch Online members still have access to unique features, such as the GameCube app on Switch 2, which includes games like Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Luigi’s Mansion. As Nintendo continues to add classic games to the service, it remains to be seen how they’ll address the disappointment of removing Game Vouchers.
