Xbox is giving refunds to players who purchased the upgraded version of Red Dead Redemption after a rocky launch. Both Microsoft and Rockstar Games have received complaints about pricing issues recently, and the confusion surrounding this upgrade led to frustration among fans who weren’t sure what had gone wrong. Now, Xbox seems to be fixing the problem by refunding those who paid for what was originally promised as a free upgrade.
Despite being released over 15 years ago, Red Dead Redemption is currently a top-selling game on Xbox thanks to a newly released, updated version from Rockstar. Talk about a possible live-action show and a new game in the series brought attention back to this popular Western RPG, but some players were disappointed when the updated version launched. There was confusion and frustration about how it was listed in the Xbox Store, but the situation is now becoming clearer.
Xbox Is Issuing Refunds to Some Users Who Bought Red Dead Redemption on Series X/S
More than a month after the updated version of Red Dead Redemption came to Xbox Series X/S, some Reddit users who purchased the upgrade even though they already owned the original game received refunds. Rockstar had announced that players on Switch 2 and PlayStation 5 could upgrade to the new version for free, but it initially appeared Xbox 360 owners weren’t included in that offer.
After the new version launched in December 2025, many Xbox players found they weren’t receiving the promised free upgrade for Red Dead Redemption, according to Rockstar Support. This upset players because they expected the update to be free, especially since the Xbox 360 version was the only older version of the game available on Xbox. Some thought the issue stemmed from a mistake with Rockstar’s AI chatbot, while others blamed a technical problem on the Xbox Store. Regardless, many players were being asked to pay for the game even though they believed they should receive it for free, leading some to purchase the current-generation edition.

Players who originally owned the game on older Xbox consoles are now able to get the Series X/S version at no cost, and anyone who mistakenly purchased it is receiving a refund. This news is welcome for many, especially after a recent price increase for Xbox Game Pass and concerns about potential future console price hikes from Microsoft.

While a third RDR game is possible, it probably won’t be released for quite some time. However, there’s a good chance we could see an updated version of Red Dead Redemption 2 for current-generation consoles, potentially even this year. Hopefully, if that happens, the upgrade process will be much smoother than the last one.
