LEGO Fan Trades in Their Collection to Get Their ‘Holy Grail’ LOTR Set

Okay, so I’m a huge LEGO fan, and I just heard about this guy who did something amazing. He basically traded his entire LEGO collection – everything he’d been collecting his whole life! – for just one set: the LEGO Rivendell from Lord of the Rings. It’s been his dream set forever. It just goes to show you don’t need a massive, super-rare collection to really enjoy LEGO. Sometimes, getting that one set you really want is way more satisfying than having tons of stuff. It’s all about the fun, right?

I’ve been building with LEGOs for as long as I can remember, and it’s crazy to think they’ve been around since 1949! It started with those classic bricks, and now they’ve got sets based on everything – I’m a huge fan of the Star Wars and Harry Potter ones. They even do LEGO video games like Animal Crossing and Sonic the Hedgehog, which is awesome. But be warned, collecting can get pricey! They’re releasing a massive Pokemon set with Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise, and it’s already up for pre-order at nearly $650!

One LEGO fan, Reddit user jaynay55, recently achieved a long-held dream by trading in a large collection of LEGO sets to purchase the new LEGO Icons Lord of the Rings: Rivendell set. This detailed build, featuring 6,167 pieces, recreates the iconic elven sanctuary from Peter Jackson’s films based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Priced at $499.99, the set includes 15 minifigures, including popular characters like Gandalf, Aragorn, and the hobbits, allowing fans to build a scene from the beginning of The Fellowship of the Ring and their quest to destroy the One Ring.

This impressive LEGO set features detailed recreations of iconic locations like Frodo’s room, an elven forge, the shards of Narsil, and the Council of Elrond. It’s one of the largest LEGO sets ever made, currently ranked ninth on the official LEGO website – between the LEGO Star Wars The Razor Crest and the LEGO NINJAGO City Markets in terms of piece count. Released in March 2023, one fan admits he’d been wanting it for three years, eventually trading his entire LEGO collection to afford it.

His LEGO collection previously focused on Star Wars items, especially LEGOs like the now-discontinued TIE Fighter Pilot Helmet, which still sells online for $300 to $500. He also had a collection of rare Star Wars Minifigures. Other notable sets he sold included the Marvel Endgame Final Battle set and The Madrigal House from Disney’s Encanto, both of which are no longer sold officially but can be found online for under $100 each. While he only recovered about 60% of the estimated value of his collection (according to the BrickLink LEGO trading site), he’s happy with his new purchase and doesn’t seem to mind.

While the Rivendell LEGO set isn’t considered rare, its high cost and large size can be off-putting to some. Good news for fans who enjoyed Rivendell’s impressive design: leaked details suggest the upcoming LEGO Minas Tirith will be even bigger and become the largest Lord of the Rings set ever created. Although LEGO hasn’t officially announced how many bricks it will contain, the set is expected to be more substantial than Rivendell, with estimates placing its price around $500.
