CWA Union Met With Ubisoft, Says Company Brought “Nothing”

The fallout from Ubisoft Halifax’s recent closure is becoming increasingly complicated. The union representing 61 of the 71 laid-off employees, CWA Canada, announced they had a meeting with Ubisoft on Wednesday, just one day after filing a legal complaint with the Nova Scotia Labor Board.

However, the meeting, they say, resulted in no progress.

CWA Says Ubisoft Came Without Documents

CWA President Carmel Smyth told TopMob that Wednesday morning’s meeting was a letdown.

She stated that Ubisoft didn’t offer any evidence of financial hardship and presented no solutions for finding work elsewhere within the company or improving severance packages. Essentially, they came to negotiations unprepared.

She explained that a concern was raised about employees on parental leave being excluded from the proposed two-month severance package. However, instead of discussing a solution, Ubisoft reportedly said they would share their thoughts on Friday.

Smyth expressed frustration, stating that the company’s failure to prepare for the closure and their lack of warning raise concerns about their motives and whether they are committed to fair treatment.

We’re still pushing for full transparency and ensuring you receive the answers and the compensation you’ve earned after a decade of service.

Beyond discussing the meeting, the union also stated that Ubisoft received almost $1 billion (C$980 million) in government tax breaks between 2020 and 2024.

TopMob has contacted Ubisoft for an update on the situation and their thoughts on the recent meeting. We haven’t received a reply despite multiple attempts. If Ubisoft responds, we will update this article with their statement.

So, I’m really curious to hear what everyone thinks about the recent news with Ubisoft and the CWA Canada union. I’d love to chat about it – let’s share our thoughts in the comments below, and if you’re up for a more in-depth discussion, come join us over on the TopMob Discord server!
