Cory in the House is in the Top 3 Highest-Rated Games of All Time on Metacritic

Despite a strong year for gaming in 2008 with releases like Grand Theft Auto 4, Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, and Dead Space, a surprising title now tops Metacritic’s list of highest-rated games based on user reviews: Cory in the House for the Nintendo DS. While those other popular games have fallen from the top 10, this tie-in game from a TV show remains remarkably popular with players.

It’s no surprise that critically acclaimed games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which won big at The Game Awards, are popular with players. However, it’s definitely unexpected to see Cory in the House receiving similar praise. Despite how unusual that sounds, it’s happening, and this DS game might continue to gain even more popularity.

As of today, Cory in the House has the second-highest user rating on Metacritic, with an impressive 9.3 out of 10 based on over 2,300 positive reviews. It has very few negative reviews – only 163 – and no mixed opinions. This strong positive response puts it ahead of many critically acclaimed games. Even more remarkably, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 currently holds the top spot on Metacritic, boasting a score of 9.5 out of 10 from more than 23,000 reviews.

It’s clear why Cory in the House is trending so high in game rankings: it’s become a popular internet joke. People are intentionally leaving exaggerated, humorous reviews on Metacritic, like claiming the game saved their marriage or is better than anything ever created. This isn’t the first time this has happened – players boosted the game’s score back in 2013 just to see how high it would go. Now, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently gained a lot of attention with new downloadable content, giving it a large number of positive reviews that Cory in the House will struggle to beat. Even a small difference in score, like going from 9.3 to 9.5, can be surprisingly important.

It’s important to note that Cory in the House received very poor reviews from critics. It doesn’t even have a Metascore yet, with only two reviews, both of which were negative. Interestingly, there’s often a difference between what critics and players like. While The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the highest-rated game on Metacritic by critics, it didn’t make the top 10 for players. This isn’t too surprising given Ocarina of Time‘s importance, but other critically acclaimed titles like Clair Obscur and the Metal Gear Solid series are also missing from the player-voted top 10. Conversely, games like SoulCalibur and both Super Mario Galaxy titles are highly ranked by critics but didn’t make the cut for player favorites.
