As a big LEGO and Pokémon fan, I was so excited when LEGO finally announced their Pokémon sets! But honestly, I was a little disappointed with the Pikachu set they showed off. I’ve seen some older Pikachu builds from Mega Bloks, and I think those actually looked better. I was really hoping LEGO would knock it out of the park, but this one just didn’t quite hit the mark for me.
It was natural for LEGO and Pokémon to team up, as both are hugely popular brands. However, LEGO couldn’t create Pokémon sets for a long time because Mega Bloks had an existing agreement with Pokémon. That changed in 2025 when Mega Bloks lost the rights, allowing LEGO to officially partner with The Pokémon Company. This is exciting news for LEGO fans who have always wanted official Pokémon building sets! While we don’t know exactly how many Pokémon-themed LEGO products will be released, LEGO has already announced three sets planned for 2026.
LEGO Fans Aren’t Happy With the Pikachu Set
LEGO recently announced a new Pikachu and Poke Ball set, but the $199.99 price tag has drawn criticism from some fans who find the design a bit disappointing. Many are comparing it unfavorably to older, more affordable Pikachu sets from Mega Bloks. The LEGO set has 2,050 pieces and costs more than twice as much as similar Mega Bloks sets like Jumbo Pikachu (806 pieces) and Motion Pikachu (1,092 pieces), which are both still available for under $100. Despite having fewer pieces, the Mega Bloks sets are roughly the same size as the new LEGO Pikachu, leading many to question the price difference.
Pokemon Fans Think LEGO Pikachu Looks “Uncanny” Compared to Mega Bloks
Many fans struggled with the price of the LEGO Pokémon set, and some felt the design wasn’t as good as they’d hoped. While it included a Poké Ball, the LEGO Electric-type Pokémon model looked strange to some, especially the face. People also worried the blocky shape would make it hard to pose once taken off its stand. Interestingly, a similar Pokémon set from Mega Bloks, called Motion Pikachu, has a crank that allows the model to move – a feature that’s missing from the pricier LEGO version.
LEGO’s Eevee Set Looks Better
While the LEGO Pikachu set hasn’t been well-received, the LEGO Eevee set has gotten a much more positive reaction. With 587 pieces, Eevee costs just $59.99, which is considerably less expensive than the Pikachu and Poke Ball set. Although the Eevee model is smaller, many LEGO enthusiasts prefer its design. This difference in opinion has led to questions about why the Pikachu design didn’t resonate as well, particularly since Pikachu is the face of the Pokémon franchise.
Image via LEGO LEGO also unveiled a set featuring Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. These builds closely resemble the Pokémon’s designs from the video games, but they come with a high price tag of $649.99. This makes it the most expensive set in the LEGO Pokémon line by far, though it does contain an impressive 6,838 pieces. The set also includes a base designed with three distinct areas representing the Water, Fire, and Grass types of each Pokémon.
It will be interesting to see if the recent criticism of the Pikachu LEGO set affects sales when the collection launches on February 27th. However, considering how popular Pokémon is, these new LEGO sets will probably be successful anyway. Sadly, some people are already reselling the sets on eBay at significantly inflated prices.
