7 Most Unlikeable Bleach Characters Fans Can’t Stand

The anime Bleach featured a lot of memorable characters that fans loved, including Ichigo Kurosaki, Rukia Kuchiki, Chad, and others. Characters like Toshiro and Grimmjow were also popular, whether they were Soul Reapers or Arrancars. However, not every character was a hit with viewers, as some designs were simply irritating to many.

Honestly, some characters in Bleach really rubbed fans – and me! – the wrong way. I get that they might have been trying to add some humor or be a foil to the more serious characters, but it just didn’t land. They ended up being genuinely annoying and, frankly, a bit of a drag on the whole story. The series would have been better off without them, in my opinion, and a lot of fans seem to agree!

Keigo Asano Provided Slice-of-Life Comedy That No One Needed

Keigo is the Kind of Character Who Inspired Minoru Mineta

The first several episodes of Bleach, and even some later ones, featured typical high school antics. This meant viewers spent time with Ichigo’s classmates, but some of them felt like overused and silly stereotypes. Keigo Asano stands out as the most problematic example – he’s a hyperactive student who gets overly enthusiastic about girls. When My Hero Academia introduced the character Minoru Mineta, who’s known for being a bit of a pervert, it’s clear the creators drew inspiration from characters like Keigo.

Keigo had one good moment, helping Ikkaku and Yumichika find a place to stay after his sister, Mizuho, gave the okay. However, most of the time he’s frustratingly one-dimensional – a predictable character obsessed with chasing girls and lacking any real depth. While some viewers might not mind his behavior, most will likely find him irritating and ineffective.

Chizuru Honsho Has a Predatory Attitude Around Orihime at School

LGBT Anime Characters Can Be So Much Better Than This

While some of Ichigo’s classmates who weren’t fighters were alright, like Mizuiro, others were difficult. Chizuru Honsho, besides Keigo Asano, was the most troublesome and irritating student in school, and for pretty much the same reasons as Keigo. Both Chizuru and Keigo are overly focused on pursuing girls, which unfortunately leads to poor and harmful representation of LGBT/queer people.

Thankfully, Chizuru’s behavior became much more restrained as the series went on, and she didn’t act that way during her appearance in the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc. However, she initially came across as overly protective and annoying, constantly trying to keep Orihime safe. Later, when Orihime felt indebted to Chizuru for this protection, Chizuru inappropriately took advantage of the situation.

Nnoitora Gilga Seemed Determined to Make Everyone Despise Him

Nnoitora’s Motives Were Shallow and Revolting

Most of the villainous Arrancars weren’t meant to be liked, but a few, like Coyote Starrk and Tier Harribel, had sympathetic qualities, and others, such as Grimmjow and Ulquiorra, were undeniably cool. However, Nnoitora Gilga, the 5th Espada, was simply too unpleasant to tolerate. He, like Grimmjow, wanted to be the strongest Arrancar, but his approach to achieving that goal was completely unacceptable.

Grimmjow fought with a degree of honor during his battles with Ichigo, but Nnoitora happily used underhanded tactics and even justified them. What’s even worse, Nnoitora is openly prejudiced against women, declaring that he dislikes any woman who is more powerful than him or other male fighters. This attitude feels out of place in the Bleach universe, considering characters like Yoruichi, Bambietta Basterbine, and Harribel are all strong and respected female warriors.

Hiyori Sarugaki is Yet Another Violent Tsundere in a Cast Full of Them

The Bleach anime often features spirited characters who are both endearing and quick-tempered, like Ichigo, Rukia, and Riruka. But this approach didn’t work as well with Hiyori Sarugaki, a supporting character and one of the Visored. While not a bad character, Hiyori frustrated many Bleach fans because she felt like just another aggressive and standoffish ‘tsundere’ type.

Hiyori briefly earned some sympathy when a flashback showed her missing Captain Hikifune, who was like a mother figure to her. However, she quickly lost that goodwill by harshly rejecting Kisuke, even kicking him. Even as a Visored, Hiyori remained difficult, frequently attacking Shinji and Ichigo, sometimes for no reason at all. Thankfully, she became a little more bearable during the Thousand-Year Blood War Arc.

Candice Catnipp’s Temper and Vanity Made Her an Irritating Sternritter

Candice’s Reckless Temper Also Got Her Into Trouble on the Battlefield

Similar to the Arrancars, most of the Sternritter were designed to be villains, so it’s not surprising they weren’t very likable. However, a few, like the comical Askin and the regal Jugram, were actually quite interesting. Within the all-female Bambis squad, Bambietta proved popular with fans thanks to her aggressive fighting style. Her friend, Candice Catnipp, wasn’t as well-received. She mostly felt like a repeat of Bambietta – another passionate, reckless fighter – and didn’t really stand out on her own.

Candice is at her worst when she’s a frustratingly loud character with no redeeming qualities to offset her impulsive behavior. She constantly bothers Ichigo and the audience with pointless chatter and trivial complaints, like getting upset when her hair gets messy. Her only motivation – wanting to kill Ichigo to impress Yhwach – feels selfish and doesn’t resonate with Bleach fans, making her a generally unpleasant character to watch.

Marechiyo Omaeda Delivers Results as a Braggart, But Only Barely

Lieutenant Marechiyo Omaeda isn’t afraid to back up his boasts, as seen in his fight against Nirgge Parduoc during the fake Karakura Town battle. He cleverly tricked Nirgge into underestimating him by pretending to be weak and slow, then defeated him with a sudden burst of speed. However, most of the time, Marechiyo talks a bigger game than he can deliver.

It’s initially amusing to see a tough, self-absorbed character like Marechiyo working with a group of stealthy Soul Reapers, but that quickly gets old. He soon feels like a joke that’s run its course, leaving only his irritating qualities. Despite even bravely defending his family from BG9, Marechiyo doesn’t develop enough as a character to make up for it.

Loly Seemed to Exist Purely to Torture Orihime in Las Noches

The anime Bleach features many frustratingly hot-tempered characters, and surprisingly often, these are female. These characters frequently caused more trouble than they solved, and didn’t win over many fans. A good example is Loly Aivirrne, a relatively unimportant Arrancar who, along with her friend Menoly Mallia, spent their time bullying Orihime. Ultimately, their only purpose in the story seemed to be creating a problem that the antihero Grimmjow would then resolve for Orihime.

Loly’s reasons for doing things were completely self-centered and frustrating to watch. She had a strong, unrequited crush on Sosuke Aizen, and it seemed her only goal was to make Aizen’s attention to Orihime cause her jealousy. On top of that, Loly tried to appear strong, but she didn’t demonstrate any real strength when facing enemies like Grimmjow, Yammy, and Quilge Opie.
