7 Most Unlikable Attack on Titan Characters Fans Can’t Stand

One of the main reasons Attack on Titan became so popular worldwide is its diverse and compelling characters. While Eren, Mikasa, and Armin are central to the story, the series features a strong supporting cast that allows viewers to connect with a variety of perspectives and understand the motivations and challenges faced by many different characters.

Like any popular show, Attack on Titan has its share of characters that fans love to hate. Some characters earn that dislike, while others are more complicated. But it’s clear that certain characters consistently rank among the most disliked by the show’s audience.

Yelena

Yelena was a significant character in the final season of Attack on Titan, acting as a villain for much of the ending. As part of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers, she did many things that made fans dislike her. Throughout the series, her behavior and choices made it hard to find anything sympathetic about her.

Yelena was a dangerous and devoted follower of Zeke, so much so that she was willing to manipulate and kill to advance his beliefs. While the show featured several characters with extreme ideologies, Yelena was particularly disturbing due to the lengths she went to.

Sergeant Major Gross

A central theme of Attack on Titan is how past wrongs can create an endless loop of revenge and conflict. Sergeant Major Gross embodies the most destructive aspects of this cycle, representing the very worst of human behavior it can produce.

Gross exploited his power within Marley’s security forces to mistreat and terrorize Eldians. He was a deeply cruel and prejudiced man who desired the complete destruction of the Eldian people, and he caused the deaths of many, including Grisha’s sister, Faye, whom he subjected to a horrific and brutal attack. Though he eventually faced consequences for his actions, he remains a widely despised character among fans.

Rod Reiss

I’ve noticed a lot of fans really dislike Rod Reiss, and it mostly comes down to how he treated his daughter, Historia. He essentially let Historia’s mother die, then abandoned her completely. It felt incredibly manipulative how he only tried to reconnect with her when he needed her to help with his own plans – specifically, trying to get her to kill Eren and steal his Titan power. It just didn’t sit right with a lot of viewers, myself included.

Fans dislike Rod for more than just his failings as a father. He’s a coward who expects his children to carry out his beliefs, and he prioritized his family’s status over their well-being. While he’s not the most villainous character, he’s definitely not someone you’d find yourself supporting.

Fritz

Among a cast of unlikeable characters, Fritz is by far the most reprehensible. He lacks any redeeming qualities or understandable motivations; he’s simply a villain responsible for all the pain and loss in the show.

The former King of Eldia was a cruel and ambitious tyrant who built his empire by conquering lands, enslaving people, and causing widespread suffering. Though he doesn’t appear often, his actions clearly demonstrate that he’s the most villainous character in Attack on Titan, and the source of immense pain throughout the series.

Floch Forster

Similar to Yelena, Floch demonstrates how strong beliefs and misplaced trust can lead someone down a dark path. As a devoted member of the Yeagerists, he became a key follower of Eren, especially towards the series’ end. Floch became so convinced that Eren’s plan was the only way to achieve peace for the Eldians that he readily betrayed those who were once his friends.

While viewers do witness Floch’s tragic decline – unlike some characters who are simply portrayed as villains – it hasn’t improved his popularity. Many fans find his actions and willingness to endanger humanity unforgivable.

Zeke Yeager

Similar to his brother, Zeke is a compelling character who helps viewers understand the lasting impact of trauma and the cycle of hatred within Attack on Titan. Interestingly, despite his brother committing even more terrible acts, Zeke is often the more disliked character.

Zeke’s difficult childhood and surroundings explain how he became the self-hating and cruel person he was. While we can understand the reasons behind his actions, it doesn’t lessen the horror of the many lives he took or his attempt to destroy the Eldian people. Ultimately, Zeke became a frustrating hindrance, and many felt relieved when he was finally defeated.

Gabi Braun

Gabi often receives harsh criticism from fans, which sometimes feels unwarranted. She was designed to be both unique and share similarities with Eren, but she faced an uphill battle from the start.

I have to admit, Gabi initially came across as really stubborn and self-righteous. She’d been taught from a young age to see the people of Paradis as monsters who deserved everything bad that happened to them. While she definitely grows as a character later on, it’s hard for some viewers to get past how she acted at the beginning. And, honestly, the fact that she was responsible for the death of such a popular character didn’t make things any easier for her with the fanbase.
