Naruto: The Uchiha Forbidden Jutsu Of Izanami and Izanagi, Explained

The anime series Naruto features incredibly powerful characters. Creator Masashi Kishimoto carefully developed each one, aiming for originality and strength. Building such impressive characters was challenging, so Kishimoto put extra effort into giving them distinct and special abilities.

The Sharingan is one of the most well-known abilities in the anime and manga series Naruto. This special power, called a Dojutsu, is exclusive to the Uchiha clan and has been desired by others for generations due to its incredible abilities. Among the many powerful techniques the Sharingan offers, Izanagi and Izanami are particularly notable.

Izanagi Allows Its User To Cheat Death

Izanagi is a particularly dangerous ability because, unlike other powerful Sharingan techniques, anyone with the Sharingan can use it. While most illusions (Genjutsu) trick a person’s senses, making them believe in false realities, Izanagi actually alters reality itself. This means a user can change things however they choose.

Izanagi was primarily used as a last resort to escape death. Madara employed it to survive a battle with Hashirama, and Danzo used it to protect himself from Sasuke. These instances clearly show Izanagi’s incredible power, but it comes at a steep price: the user permanently loses the eye used to perform the technique. Because of this significant cost, it’s only activated when absolutely necessary.

Izanami Is A Powerful Technique That Traps People Forever

Izanami, similar to Izanagi, is a very strong ability that Uchiha clan members have used for many generations. It’s essentially the opposite of Izanagi, and was actually created to prevent some Uchiha from abusing the power of Izanagi. Like Izanagi, using Izanami causes blindness in the eye that casts it. The technique works by trapping the target in an endless loop.

Those caught in Izanami are trapped, desperately trying to break free but failing each time. The only way to escape is to fully accept what they’ve done. Given how powerfully it disabled someone like Kabuto Yakushi, Izanami is clearly one of the most formidable abilities in the Naruto universe.

The Mangekyou Sharingan Also Has Special Abilities

The Mangekyou Sharingan Has Several Overpowered Techniques

Most Naruto fans know the Mangekyou Sharingan is a much more powerful and dangerous version of the regular Sharingan. It includes all the abilities of the normal Sharingan, plus unique techniques that differ for each user. A great example is Itachi Uchiha, who possessed incredibly strong abilities like Tsukuyomi and Amaterasu.

As a huge fan, I’ve always been fascinated by Tsukuyomi! It’s widely considered one of the most terrifying Genjutsu ever seen in the series. Imagine being trapped in a nightmare where you relive the same horrific experience endlessly – it completely messes with your sense of time. Getting out of it sounds incredibly difficult, and even Kakashi, a super-powerful ninja, was actually hospitalized for days after being caught in it! It really highlights just how dangerous this technique is.

Itachi wasn’t the only Uchiha to unlock the Mangekyou Sharingan and gain unique abilities. Others who awakened it were:

  • Sasuke could only use Amaterasu, but he could control it far better than Itachi, thanks to his second eye.
  • Obito Uchiha was able to use short-range Kamui, allowing him to phase through attacks.
  • Kakashi had the long-range version of Kamui with which he could send any object or person into the Kamui dimension.
  • Shisui’s Mangekyou Sharingan gave him access to Kotoamatsukami, the best Genjutsu that a normal human being could use.
  • Shin Uchiha used his Mangekyou Sharingan to brand objects and telekinetically control them.

Characters like Izuna, Madara, and Indra possessed the Mangekyou Sharingan, but surprisingly, they didn’t have any unique powers associated with it. This was a creative decision by the author, Kishimoto, who chose not to give them special abilities. It’s a bit unexpected, considering how important these characters are to the overall story. Giving them unique skills would have likely made them even more compelling. Now that Kishimoto has finished working on Naruto, however, these questions will probably remain unanswered.
