In Hytale, Clay is essential for building colorful walls and structures. If you have a specific design in mind for your base, collecting different colored Clays is the first thing you’ll need to do.
Clay is a fairly common resource in Hytale that you can dig up directly from the environment. But to make colored clay, you’ll need petals, which come from specific plants and flowers. This guide will show you where to find clay, how to turn it into different colors, and how to get the petals you need. Let’s get started!
How to Make Clay in Hytale
In Hytale, you can make Clay at the Furniture Workbench by going to the Pottery section. It takes 4 Red Sandstone to craft one Clay.

You can only make clay using Red Sandstone, not regular Sandstone. You’ll find Red Sandstone in the Howling Sands (Zone 2), both on the surface and underground. When searching above ground, look for areas with reddish-colored land.
This area contains significant amounts of Sandstone, Red Sandstone, Red Clay, and occasionally pure Clay. You can mine Red Clay and Clay directly from here, though they appear less frequently than Red Sandstone. The image above illustrates the different textures of each material – Sandstone, Red Sandstone, Red Clay, and Clay.
Red Clay cannot be turned into Red Clay – Smooth; you need pure Clay for that.
How to Get Colored Clay in Hytale
In Hytale, you can create different colored clays using the Furniture Workbench. These colored clays are essential for crafting many items. To make them, you’ll need to collect flower petals that match the color you want.
You can get petals by breaking certain flowers and plants, or by making them at the Furniture Workbench in the Textiles section.
Instead of using the ‘F’ key to pick up flower petals, use your fists, a tool, or a weapon. This ensures you collect the petals properly.

In Hytale, Azure, Blood, and Storm Petals are unique crafting materials not used for making clay items. Instead, they’re essential for upgrading your Farmer’s Workbench to its highest tiers, specifically Tier 9 and Tier 10.
How to Farm Petals in Hytale
Okay, so you can get petals by just chopping down flowers, but honestly, that gets old fast. It’s way too slow if you need a ton of one specific clay type for a big build. I quickly realized it’s much better to set up a proper petal farm instead of running around picking flowers all day. Here’s a breakdown of how to craft all the different petals in Hytale – it’s super helpful!
| Petals | Crafting Recipe |
|---|---|
| Yellow Petals | – |
| White Petals | Cotton + Yellow Petals |
| Black Petals | White Petals + Charcoal |
| Blue Petals | Blue Flatcap Mushroom + White Petals |
| Cyan Petals | Blue Common Mushroom + White Petals |
| Green Petals | Lettuce + White Petals |
| Orange Petals | Carrot + White Petals |
| Red Petals | Apple + White Petals |
| Pink Petals | Turnip + White Petals |
| Purple Petals | Aubergine + White Petals |
In the game Hytale, you can grow Yellow Petals directly from the ground by farming Sunflowers. These Yellow Petals can then be crafted into White Petals using Cotton, another farmable resource that unlocks at Farmer’s Workbench Tier 7.
White Petals are the foundation for creating all other colored Petals. Gathering flowers directly from the world isn’t the best way to get a lot of a specific Petal type. Instead, building a farm that goes from Yellow → White → Colored Petals lets you produce Petals quickly. For instance, to get many Pink Petals, you’d farm Sunflowers for Yellow Petals, Cotton for White Petals, and then Turnips to change the White Petals into Pink.
Blue and Cyan Petals are unique because you can’t grow Blue Common Mushrooms or Blue Flatcap Mushrooms – you can only find them while exploring. Luckily, both types are relatively common in the game. You can find Blue Common Mushrooms in the Azure Forests of the Emerald Grove, and Blue Flatcap Mushrooms grow on the mountains in the Whisperfrost Frontiers.
