Multinational bank Barclays (BARC) is apparently spicing up its portfolio by exploring a blockchain platform for payments, Bloomberg exclaimed on a thrilling Friday.
The London-based financial services giant is currently consulting with technology providers-proof Banks R Us is still thriving-hoping to beat out JPMorgan for the crown of decentralized banking royalty.
Reports suggest Barclays might dabble in stablecoins and tokenization, according to insiders who, for non-sensational reasons, are also casually familiar with the matter.
JPMorgan debuted tokenized deposits, which are basically digital tokens on a decentralized ledger, back in 2019 with its dollar‑denominated JPM Coin-a move that some might call “revolutionary” or “just a gimmick,” depending on your coffee preference.
More recently, HSBC hopped on the token train, opening doors to tokenized deposits and proving that the families in banking can be just as generous as they are shrewd.
These institutions are playing with the idea that blockchain can make financial processes clearer and quicker by running them on decentralized networks-essentially saying, “Who needs intermediaries when you’ve got half‑the‑world connected?”
