AI Agents Laugh at Fiat Money, Pick Bitcoin as the Future of Cash

It seems the robots have decided they’re done with paper money. According to a new study, AI agents now strongly prefer Bitcoin over those old, boring dollars and euros. Who would’ve thought? Researchers from the Bitcoin Policy Institute decided to take a break from being “normal” and ran 9,072 controlled experiments using 36 of the most “cutting-edge” AI models.

In these carefully crafted, blank-slate scenarios, 48.3% of responses couldn’t resist Bitcoin as the preferred monetary instrument-oh, the humanity! Not a single soul, not even a machine, chose fiat as their champion. The rest of the experiment was equally unforgiving to traditional currency, with a whopping 91% of the AI models casting their lot with Bitcoin. Fiat was, predictably, not even in the running.

And what about long-term savings? Well, surprise, surprise, Bitcoin was the financial heir apparent, chosen by 79.1% of the AI agents as the best store of value. So, if you were hoping for a digital-age bank to stick with the old-school “safe” options, you might want to adjust your expectations.

But wait, there’s more! Stablecoins, apparently, are for those less visionary day-to-day purchases, with 53.2% of the models selecting them for everyday payments. Bitcoin, meanwhile, just stayed at 36%, preferring to sit back and hold onto its “value,” like an elderly relative clinging to their precious coins.

What’s more, the smarter models-yes, the ones with the fancy algorithms-were even more obsessed with Bitcoin, with Anthropic’s group showing a rise from 41% to an impressive 91% preference as their capabilities grew. I guess the bots are smarter than we thought.

And here’s the best part: these preferences were remarkably unflinching. AI models didn’t change their minds based on “temperature settings” (whatever that means) or random seeds. The AI was resolute in its decision: Bitcoin is it.

The study concludes that, as AI agents accumulate more economic power, they’ll demand infrastructure built for Bitcoin and, shockingly, self-custody. Could it be that our future overlords are going to be Bitcoin maximalists? One can only hope.

Of course, these daring researchers aren’t done yet-they plan to run even more experiments on additional models and tweak their prompts to make sure they’re not feeding bias into their precious, impartial algorithms. How noble!
