Bungie has been listening to player feedback about Marathon and is sharing how they plan to fix some of the biggest concerns in an upcoming update. They’ve consistently improved Marathon since its release, both with bug fixes and new content, and player input has been essential to that process.
Player feedback has really shaped the development of the game. The initial alpha test wasn’t well-received, which led Bungie to postpone the release and include features players specifically asked for, like a solo queue and proximity chat. Because of these changes, the game launched in much better condition. Bungie continues to listen to its community, and recently added a Duos mode – another popular request that wasn’t ready for the initial launch but has quickly become a fan favorite.
Marathon Reveals The Top Three Community Concerns
Following the April 28 update to Marathon, Bungie responded to player feedback on social media. One key concern was the power of the WSTR shotgun, which had recently been reduced in strength. Bungie had already addressed this in the update, explaining the change was temporary. They’ve now clarified that the shotgun’s damage was reduced too much, and the latest patch restores its damage and effectiveness against enemies to what it was before the initial adjustment.

A key concern for players is the overuse of grenades in combat. Joe Ziegler, the game director for Marathon, has acknowledged this is a significant issue for the development team. Players have expressed frustration that firefights often turn into chaotic grenade explosions. Bungie is considering solutions like limiting how many grenades a player can carry or stack, and they hope to implement a fix before the end of the current season.
Man, the Gold Ares Railgun was totally broken! Especially if you had a Prestige mod on it – you could one-shot runners even with purple or gold shields. Bungie’s already said that much damage was a mistake and they’re fixing it. They want the gun to feel powerful with all the attachments, but it shouldn’t be able to instantly kill runners with strong shields, because that just makes playing against it super frustrating.
This open communication between Bungie and its players isn’t a one-time event; it’s been happening consistently ever since Marathon was first released in March. This approach aligns with Bungie’s commitment to continually improve Marathon over the years, and their dedication to supporting the game for a long time.

As Season 1 of Marathon nears its end – expected in June – the first group of players will soon see their progress reset. Season 2, called Nightfall, will then run through August. Bungie hasn’t shared all the details yet, but they’ve hinted at new additions like nighttime map versions, a new character customization option, and more. A key feature of Nightfall will be the Cradle, a system letting players fine-tune their runner’s abilities.
