This article, first published on April 23rd, has been updated with a timeline of news about Mass Effect 5 since it was announced. Andrea Trama last updated it on May 2, 2026.
Fans of the Mass Effect series have been anxiously awaiting the fifth main game, and have received little news until recently. Game director Michael Gamble has now shared a small update on how development is going. The original Mass Effect was a landmark RPG from the 2000s, and players are excited to see what comes next in the story.
Fans have been eagerly awaiting a new Mass Effect game for quite some time. BioWare initially revealed the project back in 2020 at The Game Awards, but significant updates have been scarce. While the team has shared small glimpses through annual N7 Day celebrations, fans have largely been limited to short trailers and concept art. Now, Michael Gamble has finally provided an update on the game’s development progress.
Mass Effect 5 Director Offers a Small Comment About the Game’s Progress
The comment came from a tweet Gamble responded to. A fan pointed out that it had been a while since the last update – the Krogan teaser on N7 Day in November. Gamble explained that he’s been too busy actually working on Mass Effect 5 to share updates, and hasn’t had time to tease the project.
This is a timeline of all the updates for Mass Effect 5 so far:
- December 2020 – Official announcement at TGA with a teaser
- November 2021 – First concept art for N7 Day
- November 2022 – ME5 is confirmed to be in pre-production on N7 Day
- November 2023 – Small teasers on N7 Day
- June 2024 – ME5 is confirmed as a single-player game
- January 2025 – EA announces BioWare is undergoing a restructuring after Dragon Age: The Veilguard
- November 2025 – Team is confirmed to be fully working on ME5 for N7 Day, and a small Krogan-themed teaser is shown
- January 2026 – A job listing for Production Director appears, suggesting expansion of the team or scope of the game
- April 2026 – Michael Gamble, ME5 Director, says the team is “just busy workin”
It’s possible Casey Gamble was skillfully dodging questions about Mass Effect 5, but the fact that the game is still in development is encouraging. For years, fans have speculated about when Mass Effect 5 might be released. Some are hoping to see it as early as 2026 or 2027, while others believe it won’t be ready until around 2030. Since the game was first announced six years ago, a mix of fan theories, hints from the developers, and even the announcement of a Mass Effect TV series have kept the excitement alive.
Much of the new game is still unknown, but we learned last year that fan-favorite features like romance will be included. This isn’t unexpected, as romance has always been a key part of the Mass Effect series. Fans have responded positively to recent updates, with many hoping the long development time will result in a particularly detailed and complex game.

It’s hard to predict what news we’ll get about Mass Effect 5 for the rest of the year. By the time the game is released, it might face strong competition, especially from The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, which early testers say could be a real rival to the Mass Effect series. Hopefully, we’ll see more substantial updates this year than just brief teasers. Events like Summer Game Fest and The Game Awards would be ideal for a bigger trailer and a release date announcement, but it sounds like the development team is currently too focused on the game itself to make any major reveals soon.
