Anime and manga have given us some of the most memorable characters in storytelling, both good and evil. The villains, in particular, are often incredibly well-developed and stand out as truly iconic, with many considered among the best characters ever created.
Villains are defined by their wickedness, and many anime characters certainly fit the bill. But some are truly exceptional in their cruelty, lacking any redeeming qualities. This article will explore the most purely evil characters in anime history.
Bondrewd Sacrificed Everything For Progress
Anime: Made In Abyss
Evil characters aren’t always those who commit massive atrocities, like many villains in action-packed stories. Sometimes, even a small number of cruel acts can reveal a character’s true nature, as seen with Bondrewd.
Bondrewd stands out from typical villains because he’s not driven by malice or madness. He’s actually cheerful and seems to genuinely care for the children he lives with in the Abyss. What makes him truly frightening is his lack of empathy. He performs cruel experiments on children, believing he’s making progress, and he simply can’t grasp why these actions are harmful. This indifference to the suffering of others is what makes him so dangerous.
Mahito’s Entire Nature Is To Destroy Humanity
Anime: Jujutsu Kaisen
Some might be surprised to see Mahito on this list instead of Sukuna. While Sukuna is definitely evil, he mainly acts on his own desires. Mahito, however, actively tries to cause humans as much suffering as possible by turning them into soulless creatures.
Mahito is a Cursed Spirit created from the negative emotions humans feel towards each other. His unique ability lets him reshape people’s souls, and he enjoys deforming and killing them. Many fans consider him the most malicious and wicked character in the entire Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Imu Has Kept The World Subjugated For Centuries
Anime: One Piece
I absolutely love diving into the world of One Piece! It initially seems like this incredibly vibrant and exciting place, just begging to be explored. But the more you learn, the more you realize there’s a really dark undercurrent. It’s heartbreaking to see how much prejudice, racism, and just plain hatred exists everywhere. And it all seems to stem from this mysterious figure, Nerona Imu, who’s pulling the strings from the top of the Red Line. It’s a really powerful commentary hidden within this amazing adventure story.
The Void Century remains largely unknown, but it’s clear that Imu was in power when it ended and established the current world order. This system places the Celestial Dragons in a position of supreme authority, enabling their terrible actions. Because this arrangement has lasted for 800 years, Imu is largely responsible for the world’s problems.
Shou Tucker Did The Unspeakable
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Like with Bondrewd, evil isn’t always flashy or about causing widespread death. The most memorable villains are often those who commit subtle, horrifying acts, and Shou Tucker is a prime example of this.
Shou appears harmless, but he’s a dangerous alchemist with a dark past. He infamously turned his wife into a chimera, an act people tried to ignore. However, his true cruelty emerged when he transformed his four-year-old daughter into a monstrous combination of herself and their dog, condemning her to constant suffering. Disturbingly, he believed his actions were advancements and couldn’t understand the outrage, making his death at the hands of Scar feel deeply satisfying.
Frieza Cares Only For Power And Control
Anime: Dragon Ball
Frieza perfectly embodies the classic supervillain – the kind most people picture when they think of one. He’s a powerful, arrogant tyrant who casually destroys planets and kills millions. Despite his cruelty, Frieza remains a surprisingly popular character in the Dragon Ball series.
Even with any possible redeeming qualities, he remains completely evil. He’s best known for destroying Planet Vegeta and all the Saiyans, motivated by a prophecy of a powerful Super Saiyan defeating him and a fear of rebellion. He’s continued to terrorize the universe even in recent times, and is now far too strong for anyone to defeat.
Johan Liebert Is One Of The Greatest Villains Ever
Anime: Monster
Honestly, when people start talking about the scariest villains in anime, Johan Liebert from Monster always jumps to mind for me. It’s his personality, combined with just how incredibly smart he is, that makes him so terrifying – he’s easily the most dangerous character in the whole series. What really sets him apart from someone like Frieza, though, is that his evil feels… different. It’s so much more personal and grounded in reality, which is what makes him truly horrifying.
I’ve been studying Johan, and honestly, he’s the most textbook sociopath I’ve ever encountered. He’s unbelievably charismatic and intelligent, but it’s all a carefully constructed act. He uses his charm to manipulate everyone around him, and he’s committed truly horrific acts to get what he wants. What’s most chilling is he genuinely doesn’t seem to value life at all. He kills without remorse, and often doesn’t even do it directly – he’s a master at pushing people to the breaking point, forcing them to witness terrible losses, and ultimately driving them to suicide. It’s disturbing how calculated and cruel he is.
Griffith Betrayed Everyone For His Dream
Anime: Berserk
Berserk is known as one of the most intensely dark anime and manga series ever created, and a major reason for its reputation is its central villain, Griffith. He essentially embodies the most terrible qualities of all the villains mentioned, concentrated into one character.
From a young age, Griffith was determined to rule his own kingdom, and he was willing to do whatever it took to achieve that goal. This ambition culminated in a devastating event known as The Eclipse, considered one of the most shocking and disturbing moments in anime history. Griffith not only betrayed and sacrificed his loyal companions, whom he’d led like a family, but also committed terrible acts to gain godlike power, solidifying his reputation as one of the most villainous characters in anime.
