I’m a huge fan of Tanjiro, the main character in Demon Slayer! He really carries the show, even when other characters get a lot of focus. He’s always there, and honestly, I think we experience the whole demon vs. human conflict through him – it’s like we’re seeing it all with his eyes. He’s a pretty classic shonen hero – super kind, always honest, and fiercely devoted to his sister – but Demon Slayer does a really good job with that familiar archetype. He’s just a well-executed protagonist, and it makes a big difference.

When the story begins, Tanjiro returns home to a horrific scene: his family has been murdered by a demon, and his sister, Nezuko, is the sole survivor. However, Nezuko has also been transformed into a demon, and Tanjiro is desperate to find a way to change her back. His determination to protect her initially clashes with the Demon Slayer Corps, but he ultimately manages to convince them to allow Nezuko to live for the time being.

I’m really captivated by Tanjiro! He seems like a genuinely good person, which makes him perfect for this kind of story. But don’t let that fool you – when he fights demons, he’s incredibly focused and doesn’t pull any punches. He understands the stakes are incredibly high, and even a moment’s hesitation could be fatal. Honestly, his sheer willpower and determination are just amazing to watch.

Nezuko Kamado

Demon – Supported By Tanjiro, Nezuko Fights To Keep A Hold Of Her Remaining Humanity, All The While Surpassing A Few Limitations Associated With Demons

Nezuko Kamado’s role in Demon Slayer is unusual. She seems like she should be a main character, almost as important as Tanjiro, but she doesn’t quite feel that way. This is largely because she’s a demon-human hybrid. Because of this, Nezuko rarely speaks or actively drives the plot, even though she’s Tanjiro’s primary reason for fighting. Sometimes, she feels more like a tool to move the story forward than a fully realized character, and it’s hard to define her personality beyond simply being Tanjiro’s sister.

I’ve noticed Nezuko goes through some changes throughout the series. She gets fiercer as things move forward, but every now and then, we see glimpses of the gentler person she used to be. I think her struggle between her demon side and what’s left of her human self is a really compelling part of her story, even if it doesn’t always get the focus it deserves. And when she really lets loose in a fight, she delivers some of the most exciting scenes in Demon Slayer.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

Demon Slayer – Scared And Loud, Zenitsu Is An Acquired Taste Who Becomes More Palpable When He Is Asleep

Zenitsu is a really polarizing character in the anime – he’s much more popular in Japan than in Western countries. As a sort of co-lead alongside Tanjiro (though Nezuko doesn’t have much control over her actions), he appears frequently and often provides comic relief. He’s known for being loud, annoying, and a bit of a coward, usually preferring to run away from a fight. He’s quick to realize when he’s outmatched and easily gives in to fear, which, while understandable, can become frustrating to watch.

Zenitsu has a peculiar ability: he becomes a surprisingly skilled fighter when he’s asleep. While unconscious, he’s capable of defeating many demons. As the story progresses, Zenitsu grows and dedicates himself fully to the Demon Slayer Corps, which ultimately leads to positive changes for him.

Inosuke Hashibira

Demon Slayer – Aggressive And Capable, Inosuke Barges Head First Into Most Fights, At Least In The Early Arcs

I’m completely captivated by Inosuke’s design – it’s easily one of the most memorable in Demon Slayer! That boar head is just iconic; no one else really rocks that look. And honestly, his personality totally matches! He’s always ready to jump into a fight or pick an argument, which can be a bit much, but you always know he’s reliable and completely dedicated to helping the Hashira. He’s a wild card, but a dependable one!

Inosuke tends to rush into battles without considering the dangers, which can be risky considering he often fights opponents stronger than himself. However, this fearlessness also means he never backs down from a challenge, even against powerful demons. Throughout the series, Inosuke’s personality softens, and he becomes much more mellow as he grows and develops.

Kanao Tsuyuri

Demon Slayer – This Practitioner of Flower Breathing Should Not Be Underestimated

I’m absolutely fascinated by Kanao! She has these incredibly soft, pink eyes and keeps her dark hair in a simple ponytail. It’s heartbreaking to learn about her past, though. She had a really tough childhood, and as a way to cope, she built up these walls and shut herself off from everything. For a long time, it meant she didn’t really show any emotions, and she couldn’t bring herself to make even the smallest decisions – she’d just leave things up to fate or other people. It’s such a compelling part of her story!

Like many of the brave heroes in Demon Slayer, Kanao grows and changes throughout the story, though the anime has only shown small glimpses of this development. Recently, she hasn’t been a major focus, with brief appearances in seasons 2 and 3.

Genya Shinazugawa

Sanemi Shinazugawa

Demon Slayer, Wind Hashira – Unapproachable But Vicious, Sanemi’s Hatred For Demons Knows No Limits

Sanemi, Genya’s brother, is a powerful fighter known as the Wind Hashira. A difficult childhood event caused him to become emotionally closed off, leading him to distance himself from family, including his brother. This experience also fueled a deep and lasting hatred for demons, a rage that continues to burn strongly within him.

Sanemi is one of the older characters in Demon Slayer, but he’s not necessarily the most mature. While he isn’t childish, the Wind Hashira is often very stubborn and holds firm to his beliefs, especially when they’re challenged.

Sanemi appeared briefly in previous story sections, but the Hashira Training Arc really put him in the spotlight, along with many of the other powerful Hashira. Giyu is a highly experienced member of the Demon Slayer Corps who often comes across as strong and distant. However, he’s not as self-assured as he seems. After being a supporting character for a while, the Hashira Training Arc in Spring 2024 finally gave viewers a deeper look into why he’s so reserved and the long-held guilt he carries.

I witnessed firsthand how devastated Giyu was after his sister passed away. He seemed to find a new purpose when he met Sabito, and they quickly became close friends. They both dreamed of becoming Demon Slayers and decided to take on the Final Selection together – the very same exam where Sabito tragically lost his life. Giyu was consumed by guilt and self-doubt. He’d survived the exam, but hadn’t managed to defeat a single demon, and felt he didn’t deserve the honor of becoming the Water Hashira. It was a clear case of him feeling like a fraud, despite his abilities.

Shinobu Kocho

Demon Slayer, Insect Hashira – Just This Book By Her Cover At Your Own Peril

When you first meet Shinobu, she seems incredibly friendly and easy to like – always smiling and ready with a playful comment. But I quickly realized that cheerful exterior is actually a way for her to hide a deep and powerful hatred for demons. It all stems from the loss of her sister, Kanae, and she uses that mask of happiness to keep those painful feelings under control.

Shinobu is incredibly fierce, both in combat and with her words. This Demon Slayer character has a knack for dismantling even the most confident warriors with just a few cutting remarks, and she enjoys doing it. While she might not seem like the strongest of the Hashira at first glance, Shinobu is a serious danger to almost any demon. This is largely due to her sharp mind and expertise in medicine, which she uses to create and deploy deadly poisons.

Tengen Uzui

Ex-Demon Slayer, Sound Hashira – Stylish And Dedicated To His Wives, The Former Hashira Is An All-Around Force Of Nature

Tengen’s past is surprisingly less focused on demons than many others, but it’s still a sad story. He grew up in a ninja family and was raised by a harsh father who only valued his own happiness, no matter who got hurt. His father even manipulated him into killing some of his brothers and sisters. Eventually, Tengen left home to find his own way in the world.

Tengen’s unpredictable personality stems from a difficult upbringing and his desire to break away from his father’s influence. Despite often being forceful in his approach, he ultimately wants to do what’s right. When investigating the Entertainment District, he initially tries to involve Aoi Kanzaki, even though she’s scared to participate. He relents only when Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke volunteer to take her place. This is all motivated by his worry for his wives, who had previously been working undercover in the district. Once he suspects a powerful Upper Rank demon is present, he urges Tanjiro and his companions to withdraw to protect them.

Mitsuri Kanroji

Demon Slayer, Love Hashira – Uses A Unique Fighting Style That Is Far More Deadly Than It Sounds

The Love Hashira is a fascinating character in the series. While she didn’t have much screen time early on, she truly shined during the Swordsmith Village arc, which really introduced her as a key player.

Mitsuri earned the title ‘Love Hashira’ because of both her unique fighting style, which focuses on love, and her naturally warm and friendly personality. While she often seems sweet and innocent, she’s a fierce and capable demon slayer, just as ruthless as any other member of the Demon Corps when it comes to protecting people.

Mitsuri can be a bit eccentric, and while she’s incredibly powerful, her feelings for Tanjiro often dominate her appearances. This can sometimes make her seem a little simplistic. However, she’s a skilled Hashira with a unique weapon and imaginative fighting methods. Her battle style is certainly visually impressive and engaging.

Obanai Iguro

Demon Slayer, Serpent Hashira – Holds Himself And His Allies To The Highest Standard, And He Is Not The Most Inviting Of People

Obanai Iguro is a remarkably strong fighter, holding the title of Serpent Hashira. He’s a mysterious character, and while his full abilities haven’t been revealed in the anime yet, those familiar with the manga know that his Serpent Breathing technique is incredibly powerful.

Obanai isn’t known for being particularly friendly or considerate, especially towards those he sees as weak. He can be quite harsh, even bullying at times, as seen in his demanding training methods. This behavior is largely fueled by his dislike of Tanjiro, stemming from jealousy over Tanjiro’s connection with Mitsuri, whom Obanai is attracted to.

Obanai’s often harsh behavior, while it might not make him easy to like, reminds us that the Hashira are still people. They’re usually quite young and haven’t fully matured, and that doesn’t change even with the immense pressure of protecting humanity.

Muichiro Tokito

Demon Slayer, Mist Hashira – A Drifting Personality That Takes A While To Solidify

Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, rarely shows his feelings, which can make him seem distant or aloof. He often withdraws into his own thoughts and spends time alone. While he may not seem easy to connect with, Muichiro’s personality is rooted in a difficult past. A personal tragedy caused him to lose his memories and the ability to process his anger. This deep, underlying trauma makes him one of the most complex characters in Demon Slayer, even if it isn’t immediately obvious.

Muichiro is an exceptionally talented Demon Slayer, possibly the most gifted of them all, even surpassing Tanjiro. He’s a master of Mist Breathing, seamlessly combining its techniques with impressive swordsmanship and natural physical strength honed through rigorous training as a Hashira. He and Tanjiro have formed a particularly strong bond, and they inspire each other to improve.

Gyomei Himejima

Demon Slayer, Stone Hashira – Strong But Quiet, Gyomei Often Comes Across Like The Hashira’s Unofficial Leader

The anime Demon Slayer hasn’t explored the character of Gyomei Himejima, the Stone Hashira, in great detail so far; he’s mostly appeared in the background. Though he wasn’t a major part of earlier storylines, Gyomei will be much more important in the final arcs of the series. From what we’ve seen, he seems to be the most powerful and leading fighter among the Hashira.

I’m completely fascinated by Gyomei! He’s just this massive, silent force – incredibly strong and always so careful. He’s totally devoted to the Demon Slayer Corps, but he doesn’t easily open up to others, even his fellow Hashira. Honestly, even before the Hashira Training Arc really kicked off, he always commanded attention. He’s easily the most intimidating Demon Slayer, period. He pushes himself to the absolute limit, and expects that same level of dedication from everyone around him – it’s intense!

Kyojuro Rengoku

Ex-Demon Slayer, Flame Hashira – A Hero, A Legend, And An Inspiration

Kyojuro Rengoku immediately stands out in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train as a vibrant and passionate character. He’s energetic, friendly, and genuinely kind – a sincerity that sets him apart from many others in the anime, rivaled only by Tanjiro.

Kyojuro isn’t faking his cheerful personality; it’s simply how he genuinely sees the world, always finding something good even in difficult times. This made him incredibly popular with both his fellow Hashira and viewers. Though he doesn’t appear for long, Kyojuro makes a powerful impact on the story and leaves a lasting impression.

Murata

Demon Slayer – An Ordinary Human Who Is Just Trying His Best

Murata isn’t a major character in Demon Slayer – some viewers might not even remember him. But even though he’s not central to the story, he helps show how large the conflict truly is. The Hashira Training Arc makes it clear that the Demon Slayer Corps isn’t just about the powerful leaders and promising fighters. It’s also filled with many ordinary soldiers who are vulnerable and likely to be killed by demons. Murata represents those common soldiers, and that’s what makes him stand out.

I’ve noticed Murata isn’t anywhere near the power of the Hashira or Tanjiro’s group, but he’s definitely not helpless. He’s likely stronger than the average person, and seems to have a little talent for water breathing techniques. However, in a fight against demons, being just a bit stronger than normal isn’t enough to really take the fight to them – he’d be more useful supporting his allies.

Sakonji Urokodaki

(Former) Water Hashira – A Teacher Who Rediscovers Hope

Sakonji Urokodaki, a former Demon Slayer and now a trainer, isn’t as active during the main story of Demon Slayer. While he doesn’t have a lot of screen time, he was crucial in Tanjiro’s development, hesitantly guiding him towards a destiny that would ultimately impact the fight against demons.

Though Sakonji isn’t actively fighting demons anymore, he remains a skilled swordsman, demonstrated during his training with Tanjiro. He’s deeply haunted by the memory of the children who didn’t survive the Final Selection, feeling responsible for their deaths. When the story begins, Sakonji is a defeated and pessimistic man, initially believing Tanjiro and Nezuko have no chance. But through his interactions with them, he begins to regain hope for the future.

Jigoro Kuwajima

(Former) Thunder Hashira – Guiding Zenitsu To A Thunderous Future

Like Sakonji, Jigoro is best remembered through the accomplishments of his students, not his own actions. Though not every student thrived under his guidance, he played a key role in Zenitsu becoming a capable Demon Slayer – a difficult feat, and one some fans might debate. Jigoro demonstrates considerable patience with Zenitsu, allowing him to learn from errors while consistently offering support.

Jigoro isn’t featured much in the anime because he’s already dead, and the upcoming Infinity Castle Arc adaptation would benefit from showing more of his backstory and impact.

Aoi Kanzaki

Demon Slayer – Wars Are Not Just Won On The Battlefield, And Aoi Plays An Important Supporting Role

I’m completely fascinated by the world of Demon Slayers, and Aoi Kanzaki is a character I really admire. It’s amazing how, even after everything her family went through, she was determined to join the Corps and did pass the incredibly difficult Final Selection! But what’s so cool about Aoi is she knows her strengths. She’s not a fighter at heart, and that’s okay! Instead, she dedicates herself to helping those who are on the front lines, working at the Butterfly Mansion and caring for injured Demon Slayers. It just shows you don’t have to wield a sword to be a hero.

Aoi first appeared during the Rehabilitation Training arc, where she assisted in healing Tanjiro and Zenitsu. Following this, she began training members of the Demon Slayer Corps. What makes Aoi interesting is that she’s one of the few characters whose primary role is to support others. She intentionally avoids fighting, which sometimes bothers her. It’s realistic that not everyone joining the Demon Slayer Corps is immediately prepared for dangerous battles, and Aoi continues to be a valuable asset at the Butterfly Mansion.

Sabito

Spirit That Helps Tanjiro – A Fragment Of The Past Who Exists To Guide The Present Towards A Hopeful Future

Tanjiro’s training for the Final Selection wasn’t progressing, but things changed when Sabito unexpectedly stepped in as his instructor. At first, Sabito thought Tanjiro wasn’t strong enough to benefit from the current training, but he ultimately pushed Tanjiro to surpass his previous boundaries.

Sabito doesn’t appear for long in the anime, with his story wrapping up after only a few episodes. Despite this, he’s incredibly important in helping Tanjiro grow, arguably even more so than Sakonji. And, as you’d expect from Demon Slayer, his past is really emotional and impactful.

Kagaya Ubuyashiki

Demon Slayer Corps Leader – The Brains And Heart Behind The Hashira

Though he doesn’t always take center stage in the anime, Kagaya is a crucial character in the world of Demon Slayer. As the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, he guides the entire organization, and his advice is highly valued. A family curse causes him illness, which limits his physical involvement, but he remains a respected voice of reason, especially among the Hashira.

I’ve observed that Kagaya isn’t physically strong – it’s a consequence of his family’s curse, and sadly, he won’t live a long life. He can’t participate in battles himself, but his ability to predict what Muzan and the Twelve Kizuki will do is remarkable. Honestly, the Demon Slayer Corps would be lost without his guidance, even if he can’t fight alongside them. He doesn’t get a lot of direct interaction with the other characters, but whenever the Hashira speak about him, it’s always with deep respect and affection.

Amane Ubuyashiki

Kagaya’s Wife, Who Is Just As Dedicated To The Demon Slayer Corps

Although Kagaya is the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps, the organization truly relies on teamwork. He consistently receives support from his wife, Amane, and their children. While the family is crucial to the story, they don’t often take center stage, with Kagaya usually being the focus when they appear. However, Amane is always there, and she becomes even more involved as Kagaya’s health worsens.

During the Hashira Training Arc, Amane essentially functions as Kagaya’s representative and leader of the Demon Slayer Corps. Though she doesn’t have a lot of screen time and isn’t a particularly complex character, Amane still makes a positive impact and is as committed to the mission as Kagaya. It’s unfortunate that we don’t get to see more of the Ubuyashiki family’s story.

Kagaya And Amane’s Children

Kagaya and Amane have five children – Hinaki, Nichika, Kiriya, Kuina, and Kanata – who are almost always with them. While they don’t have major roles in the story, each child has a unique personality and purpose. Kiriya, for instance, naturally takes charge and eventually becomes the leader of the Demon Slayer Corps after his father dies. All five children are eight years old.

Tamayo

Demon And Doctor – A Crucial And Knowledgeable Ally Who Gives The Hashira An Edge

Tamayo is a relatively minor, yet significant character first appearing in the Asakusa arc. As a demon doctor, she exists between the human and demon worlds, using her abilities to both defend herself and heal others. Her independence from Muzan demonstrates that demons aren’t necessarily evil, and she gives Tanjiro reason to believe that finding a cure for Nezuko might be possible.

I’ve been watching Demon Slayer, and Tamayo is a fascinating character. She first showed up during the Asakusa Arc, then kind of faded into the background, only to reappear during the Swordsmith Village Arc. Though she didn’t have a huge role there, it feels like she’s going to be really important as the story heads towards its conclusion – Kagaya seems to be setting her up for that. She’s generally a very sweet person, but don’t let that fool you; she can be quite intimidating when she needs to be, and she’s definitely not someone you’d want to mess with.

Yushiro

Demon – Tamayo’s Assistant

Yushiro is often with Tamayo, but he’s not the friendliest demon. He can be initially frustrating, and his first encounters with Tanjiro are marked by annoyance and dislike. However, he does eventually help Tanjiro by offering guidance and assistance. While he becomes slightly more approachable over time, he generally maintains a somewhat confrontational personality.

Similar to many characters in Demon Slayer, Yushiro has a compelling past that’s hinted at but not fully explained. When he was close to death, Tamayo saved him by turning him into a demon, giving him a new life.

Hotaru Haganezuka

Swordsmith – Somebody Has To Ensure Tanjiro Is Well-Equipped

Like all powerful Demon Slayers, Tanjiro needed a skilled swordsmith, and he found one in Hotaru Haganezuka. Before the Swordsmith Village arc, Hotaru was mostly known for jokingly threatening to stab Tanjiro whenever a blade of his was damaged. Though it wasn’t a constantly repeated gag, the show didn’t overuse the joke, allowing Hotaru to remain a generally likeable character.

The Swordsmith Village arc helped us understand Hotaru better, revealing details about his past, personality, and why he sometimes loses his temper. It also showed how important swordsmiths are to the Demon Slayers, proving they’re vital in the battle against Demons.

Yoriichi Tsugikuni

Legendary Demon Slayer

Though he appears briefly in the anime and died long before the main story begins, Yoriichi is a hugely important figure in the series’ history. He was the one who developed the original breathing styles, which are now the foundation of how modern Demon Slayers fight and survive against overwhelming odds.

Honestly, Yoriichi is just an incredible character! His past is so connected to one of the biggest demons, it really adds a lot to the whole story, and you can see how much he impacts Tanjiro’s journey. Everyone considers him the strongest Demon Slayer ever, and it’s easy to see why – he’s a legend!

Muzan Kibutsuji

Demon King – The Big Bad Who Is Feared By Humans And Demons Alike

Muzan, the primary villain in Demon Slayer, looms large over the entire story, even though he isn’t always physically present. He completely controls the Twelve Kizuki and most other demons, essentially dictating their every move. While Tanjiro and the Hashira only directly fight Muzan for a small portion of the anime, they consistently battle demons who act on his orders. Each time they defeat a Kizuki, it’s like diminishing Muzan’s own power – almost like cutting off one of his fingers, or even just a fingernail, considering how much stronger he is than his followers.

Throughout Demon Slayer, the story occasionally shows glimpses into Muzan’s past and what motivates him. Muzan desperately wanted to avoid death and become immortal, which led him to become a demon over a thousand years ago. Since then, he’s become incredibly powerful, but also increasingly delusional, arrogant, and believes he’s a god. He sees humans as insignificant, but doesn’t respect demons either, viewing them merely as tools to achieve his goals.

Muzan ultimately wants to absorb Nezuko so he can gain her ability to withstand sunlight, which would make him incredibly powerful.

Kokushibo

Demon, Upper Rank One – An Incredibly Dangerous And Mysterious Demon

As a huge fan of Demon Slayer, I always felt like Kokushibo, who’s supposedly Muzan’s most powerful demon, didn’t get enough screen time in the anime itself. He really starts to show up during the Swordsmith Village arc. If you’ve only watched the anime and haven’t seen the Infinity Castle movie, he’s probably still a mystery to you. And honestly, if you’re planning on seeing the new movie coming out in 2025, you should stop reading right now – I’m about to dive into some major spoilers!

Kokushibo’s story is particularly compelling, perhaps the most interesting of all the Twelve Kizuki. He shares a family connection with Yoriichi Tsugikuni, widely considered the greatest Demon Slayer ever. Interestingly, Kokushibo used to be a Demon Slayer himself and was known as a skilled warrior. However, he always fell short of Yoriichi’s level, which led to feelings of inadequacy.

Kokushibo abandoned his humanity a long time ago, deliberately choosing to become a demon in order to gain power. He craves recognition for his strength and willingly pledged himself to Muzan to achieve it. Surprisingly, despite being quiet and less outwardly threatening than many of his fellow Twelve Kizuki, he might actually be the most unlikeable of them all.

Doma

Demon, Upper Rank Two – An Unpredictable & Blood-Thirsty Force Of Evil

Doma is one of the most striking and well-remembered members of the Twelve Kizuki. He first truly appears during the Swordsmith Village Arc, where his cruel personality is highlighted by his rivalry with Akaza. While we get a glimpse of him then, Doma becomes a central figure in the Infinity Castle Arc of the manga, and he’s expected to play a significant role in the second film of Ufotable’s movie series. He has a smaller role in the first movie, though he does have an impressive battle with Shinobu. As Upper Moon 2, Doma is exceptionally strong, which is hardly surprising.

Doma is arguably the most fun demon to watch in the series, and he’s definitely one of the most charming. He initially appears surprisingly cheerful and upbeat, making him seem almost friendly. But that’s just an act – he quickly becomes cold and ruthless when the situation demands it. Doma is exceptionally cruel and enjoys both physical and psychological torment more than most of the other demons. He’s also incredibly smart and strategic in his approach.

Akaza

Demon, Upper Rank Three – The First Showcase Of Upper Rank Power

Besides Muzan, Akaza is likely the most well-known demon from the Demon Slayer anime, especially for those who haven’t read the manga. He became famous during the Mugen Train Arc, quickly becoming a major villain. Like many battle shonen antagonists, Akaza is obsessed with fighting and becoming stronger, which leads him to constantly challenge the Hashira.

Akaza is a surprisingly complex character. He judges others based on their strength, not their background or status. He believes the weak shouldn’t exist, while the strong deserve respect and even protection. He applies this logic to himself as well, though his views shift dramatically when he remembers his past life as a human.

Hantengu

Demon, Upper Rank Four – More Than Meets The Eye…Literally

During the Swordsmith Village arc in Spring 2023, Tanjiro and several Hashira face a fierce attack from two of Muzan’s strongest demons: Hantengu and Gyokko. Hantengu, an Upper Rank Four demon, is surprisingly dangerous despite appearing weak and unstable. He uses a Blood Demon Art that lets him divide into four different personalities, each representing a part of his being. These personalities can even merge to make him even stronger.

• Sekido – Anger personified, Sekido is the most dominant personality out of the four, and he is also among the most powerful. He controls electricity by using a Khakkhara.
• Karaku – The most juvenile of Hantengu’s alter egos, Karaku just wants to have fun, which generally means he likes to play with his food. His element of choice is wind, which is generated via a fan.
• Aizetsu – Getting no enjoyment out of life, Aizetsu is a somber and pessimistic figure. This personality fights with a spear-like blade.
• Urogi – Similar to Karaku, Urogi is an energetic demon who tries to live in the moment. Unlike Karaku, this ego is not particularly sadistic. Urogi’s main method of attack is an ear-shattering scream.
• Zohakuten – Embodying pure hatred, Zohakuten seeks to punish people for perceived injustices, while obviously being entirely blind to his own cruelty.

Gyokko

Demon, Upper Rank Five – A Twisted Demon Who Revels In The Artistry Of Death

Gyokko, ranked fifth among the Twelve Kizuki, has a particularly disturbing appearance compared to the other demons. Unlike most of his peers who retain a somewhat human form, Upper Rank Five looks like a horrifying genie with a talent for grotesque body modification. However, Gyokko also sees himself as a refined artist, creating shocking and intensely realistic works of art.

Gyokko’s unpleasant personality matches his disturbing appearance – he’s full of arrogance and spite. And unlike some who just boast, this demon is truly dangerous and capable.

Daki

Demon, Upper Rank Six – Strong But Still Quite Fragile

Daki, a major villain in the Entertainment District arc of Demon Slayer, is known for being cruel and violent. This behavior comes from her deep-seated insecurities and need for approval from Muzan. Before becoming a demon, Daki was a courtesan who tragically died in a fire, but her brother, Gyutaro, rescued her. The two siblings share a close, though often argumentative, bond and are inseparable.

Daki became a demon when she was a teenager and has lived for over a century, but little else is known about her past. She’s significantly taller than characters like Tanjiro and Nezuko, but isn’t as tall as her brother or Muzan.

Gyutaro

Demon, Upper Rank Six – The Real Upper Rank Six Demon

Gyutaro, Daki’s brother, is the true strength behind the Upper Rank Six of the Twelve Kizuki. He’s a physically distinct and incredibly brutal fighter, making him a truly fearsome opponent. While he deeply cares for his sister, Daki, Gyutaro generally has little respect for others and often targets those he perceives as having better lives than himself.

Just like with Daki, the exact height and birthday of Gyutaro haven’t been officially shared in Demon Slayer. Similar to his sister, Gyutaro is well over a century old. However, he’s noticeably taller than Daki, and is likely around 5 feet 10 inches tall.

Enmu

Demon, Lower Rank One – A Sadistic Force

Though Akaza is more prominent, Enmu is a key villain in the Mugen Train Arc, fighting against Tanjiro and Inosuke. He’s the most developed of the Lower Rank Demons besides Rui; the others were quickly defeated by Muzan himself.

Many demons are portrayed as purely evil, but some have tragic pasts as humans, making them more sympathetic. However, Enmu isn’t one of those. He was a manipulative and cruel person even before becoming a demon, and his transformation only made those negative traits worse.

Rui

Demon, Lower Rank Five – The First Major Test

Rui, Tanjiro’s most frightening enemy in the first season of Demon Slayer, is disturbing on multiple levels. Despite often speaking politely, this Lower Rank demon is extremely dangerous and doesn’t hesitate to punish others. This harshness comes from being rejected by his parents after becoming a demon. Ever since then, he’s desperately tried to build a new family to fill the void of the one he lost.

Rui isn’t one of the most powerful of the Twelve Kizuki, but he’s still a dangerous opponent. He has a strong body and can also boost the abilities of other demons, or even alter how they look.

Susamaru

While not the very first demons encountered in Demon Slayer, Susamaru and Yahaba were the first to truly stand out and make a lasting impact. Before they appeared in the Asakusa Arc, most demons felt like disposable enemies, often without even names. This pair broke that pattern, setting the standard for how demons would be portrayed throughout the rest of the series.

Susamaru is a compelling villain, and often more memorable than her partner, Yahaba, in their storyline. Though her past isn’t explored much, she seems to have been an ordinary child before becoming a demon. As a demon, she’s cruel and motivated purely by her own amusement, and she’s completely controlled by Muzan.

Yahaba

Demon

Yahaba, who works with Susamaru, is very different from her in terms of personality. Where Susamaru loves taking risks, Yahaba prefers to stay calm and think things through, carefully planning how to defeat their enemies.

However, he does have a tendency to get angry when things don’t go as planned. Like Susamaru, Yahaba is easily tricked and manipulated, as Muzan was able to deceive him.

Tanjuro Kamado

Tanjiro & Nezuko’s Father

Tanjiro and Nezuko suffered a terrible loss when demons attacked their family, but they had already experienced grief before that day. Their father, Tanjuro, had died sometime earlier, though the exact timing isn’t revealed in Demon Slayer. However, because their youngest brother, Rokuta, remembered their father, it’s clear Tanjuro’s death wasn’t long before the attack.

Tanjuro doesn’t have a large role in the manga or anime, but he occasionally appears to his children in visions. He mainly serves as a source of guidance and encouragement, especially for Tanjiro and Nezuko. Although he was a skilled fighter, a debilitating illness ultimately led to his death.

Kie Kamado

Tanjiro & Nezuko’s Mother

Unfortunately, Kie’s role in Demon Slayer is very brief. Early in the first episode, Tanjiro and Nezuko’s mother and other siblings are killed, which is the event that starts the whole story and sends the two siblings on a journey for both revenge and to simply stay alive.

I noticed Kie appears a few times even after she’s gone, like when she seems to give Nezuko the push she needed during Tanjiro’s battle with Rui. We mostly see her through the memories of her children, and it paints a pretty idealized picture – she mostly comes across as just a really kind and normal mom.

Kamado Siblings

Takeo, Hanako, & Rokuta

I’ve noticed something about Tanjiro and Nezuko’s family in Demon Slayer. While they have three younger siblings – Takeo, Hanako, and Rokuta – the story really focuses on just Tanjiro and Nezuko. The younger three mostly appear briefly at the beginning, and later on in flashbacks or as memories. The series does try to show a little of what they’re like, but honestly, they mostly serve to highlight Tanjiro and Nezuko’s hardship. They don’t really get much development beyond being simply the ‘younger siblings’.

While Demon Slayer fits the mold of a typical action-packed shonen anime, it’s actually surprisingly grim. Many shonen series don’t begin with such a tragic event, but Demon Slayer starts by showing the deaths of three children. Though not depicted with excessive gore, the scene makes it clear they experienced a very painful and violent end.
