Oblivion Remastered Fans Think the Game Has Been Abandoned

Despite a surprisingly successful launch in 2025 with almost no promotion, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered may start losing players. Over a year after its initial release, the game continues to struggle with performance problems, and Bethesda doesn’t appear to be working on any fixes or updates.

Within just two weeks of launching, Oblivion Remastered quickly became one of the top-selling games of 2025, ranking as the third best. It’s estimated to have sold over two million copies on Steam alone (according to Gamalytic). While initial enthusiasm for the game overshadowed some technical problems, players were thrilled to have Oblivion available on modern consoles and PCs and were patient while waiting for fixes. Unfortunately, after only two small updates, the developers stopped releasing patches for almost a year.

It’s Been Almost a Year Since Oblivion Remastered Received a Patch

Man, it’s been rough with Oblivion Remastered. They dropped the first update pretty quickly after launch, then another one in July 2025, but it feels like they just stopped working on it after that. Now, tons of us are running into game-breaking bugs, crashes, and the game just doesn’t run well. Bethesda and Virtuos haven’t said anything about fixing things or adding updates, so a lot of fans are starting to think the game is basically abandoned. It’s a real shame, because when it works, it’s awesome, but right now it’s just frustrating.

Recent reviews for Oblivion Remastered on Steam are now mixed, with over 40% of players reporting negative experiences. Many fans hope Bethesda Game Studios will use the profits from the game’s launch to continue improving it, but they feel the company has abandoned the project. Bethesda hasn’t said whether the update released in July 2025 was the last one, or if they’re still working on fixes. With a significant amount of time having passed since that update, fans are losing hope, as bug fixes typically don’t take this long to release.

As a longtime Bethesda fan, I can tell you their games always have tons of replayability, and Oblivion is a prime example. Even though it’s a bit buggy – yeah, it still crashes sometimes! – the remastered version still pulls in over 2,000 players on Steam every day, which is pretty good for a game you play by yourself. Honestly, though, I think Bethesda dropped the ball with Oblivion Remastered. If they’d kept patching it with updates and fixing those annoying glitches, it could have had way more players sticking around.

Despite its issues, some players still hope a significant update will revitalize Oblivion Remastered and attract returning fans. While waiting for official changes, dedicated fans are creating mods, including a multiplayer mode, to improve the game themselves. However, others believe the game is unlikely to improve further and suggest accepting it as is.

There’s a good reason Bethesda might have stopped updating Oblivion Remastered: they’re probably focused on big projects like The Elder Scrolls 6, new Fallout games, and a version of Oblivion for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, planned for release in 2026. For now, the future of the remastered game is unclear, and it’s unknown what Bethesda has planned.
