The controversy began on May 3rd when the CEO shared an AI-generated “selfie” on social media. The image depicted a man resembling him – middle-aged with graying hair – in an office with a distinctive wood and black design. He explained he’d asked the AI to create an image of what he’d look like as a Gearbox Software employee. Fans immediately noticed phrases like “players first” and “Borderlands 4” written on a whiteboard in the background, leading to concerns the AI might have accessed confidential company information. Despite the CEO calling it a harmless joke and dismissing the background text, the post received widespread negative feedback. He later explained he was simply testing the AI to see what kind of inaccurate information it would generate, emphasizing that he doesn’t believe AI can actually have an identity.
The annoyance wasn’t just about one mistake in the game; it stemmed from bigger worries about the recent Borderlands 4 update details. Players had already noticed strange typos and odd errors in the update notes, like a shield being mistakenly called a grenade, which made them suspect the studio was using automated tools for official communication. Randy Pitchford responded to these claims, saying the errors were simply mistakes made by people. He insisted the studio doesn’t use AI for any customer-facing communication. He also explained he was posting about the update from his personal phone, separate from the studio’s secure computers, and that the timing of the post had nothing to do with the concerns about the update notes themselves.
Honestly, the whole situation just got way worse after the CEO responded to comments. Someone pointed out that sharing AI-generated art could hurt artists, and he basically called them a fool for even suggesting it.
