Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Review Roundup – A Victory But Not Flawless

The new Mortal Kombat 2 movie comes out in theaters this weekend, and early reviews are mixed. While generally positive, most critics acknowledge the film isn’t perfect. It’s a solid, action-packed sequel that improves on the first movie, but it doesn’t really break new ground for video game adaptations.

Mortal Kombat 2 continues the story from the 2021 film, showing the epic battle between Earthrealm and Outworld in the Mortal Kombat tournament. This time, the focus is more on Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, as the main character, though the movie still features a large cast of characters and the famously violent finishing moves from the video games.

Mortal Kombat 2 Movie Review Roundup

Here’s what critics are saying about Mortal Kombat 2:

Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting rated it 3/5, stating:

Now that the initial setup and characters are established, director Simon McQuoid jumps straight into the action, delivering fast-paced, violent fights and plenty of moments designed to please fans of the series.

Alison Foreman from IndieWire was a bit more harsh, giving Mortal Kombat 2 a C- score:

A major challenge of this project is turning a messy collection of ideas into a polished, successful film. However, with Mortal Kombat II, McQuoid doesn’t manage to build on the good work he did five years ago to create the strong movie he’s aiming for now.

Max Scoville from IGN gave it a positive 8/10 and said:

Okay, so it’s probably not going to win any Oscars, and honestly, if you’re a super-dedicated fan who knows everything about the game, you might find some things to criticize. But it’s a blast! It’s huge, over-the-top, really violent, and it doesn’t take itself too seriously – it’s just pure fun.

M.N. Miller from FandomWire gave it 7/10:

Karl Urban is a standout comedic performer in the new Mortal Kombat II movie. While the film’s tone shifts wildly, it’s a thrilling and violent return to form for the video game series, delivering plenty of action and gore.

James Preston Poole from Discussing Film was a bit more negative, giving it 2/5:

Despite claims that it’s made with fans in mind, both gamers and movie lovers deserve a higher quality experience than the disappointing action and low-budget effects in Mortal Kombat II.

Okay, so Mortal Kombat 2 is hitting theaters everywhere on May 8th, 2026 – I’ve already marked my calendar! If you’re in South Africa, there are a bunch of other new movies coming out this month too, so definitely check what else is playing.
