The History of Umbreon in Pokemon

Most Pokémon fans know Eevee, often called the Evolution Pokémon. It’s become a hugely popular character, second only to Pikachu. While Eevee is a good Pokémon on its own, many trainers want to evolve it into one of its eight different forms, making it a versatile addition to any team.

I’ve always been fascinated by Umbreon, one of the original Eeveelutions. This Dark-type Pokémon first appeared way back in Generation II, and it’s known as the Moonlight Pokémon because it evolves when it’s really close to its Trainer at night. They’re incredibly swift and smart, and those glowing rings aren’t just for show – Umbreon are natural hunters. I’ve seen them with all sorts of people, from the most celebrated heroes to some pretty notorious villains.

Gary and Gladion Both Own an Umbreon in the Original Anime

Each Trainer Has Known Their Umbreon Since They Were Unevolved

I remember watching the early episodes of the original Pokémon anime and noticing Gary Oak, Ash’s first rival, traveling with an Eevee. It wasn’t the Pokémon he started with, but it quickly became a key member of his battle team. Over time, that Eevee evolved into a powerful Umbreon, and it was clear Gary was a naturally gifted trainer – even as he pursued his research. Umbreon became a really confident and capable fighter, able to hold its own in lots of battles. I also recall seeing Umbreon act as a true hero, helping Gary and the others fight off the bad guys – those Team Galactic grunts and Pokémon working with Hunter J in the Sinnoh region.

Gladion, Lillie’s brother, has a strong and important Umbreon on his team. He found this Pokémon as an injured Eevee when he was a child, nursed it back to health, and it grew into a loyal companion and part of the family. Now, this Umbreon is a skilled battler who enjoys a good fight – it even used to practice with Lusamine’s Absol, whom it still considers a friend. While it can be a little overenthusiastic about battling, it’s generally a calm and affectionate Pokémon that deeply cares for those around it.

Spinel of the Explorers Watched His Eevee Evolve as a Child

Umbreon Awaits the Day Her Former Trainer Regains His Heart

In Pokémon Horizons: The Series, the Explorers are the main antagonists, frequently clashing with Liko and her friends, the Rising Volt Tacklers. The situation becomes much more serious when Gibeon vanishes and Spinel, a scientist from the Exceed organization, takes over as the Explorers’ leader. Spinel is a constant source of frustration for Amethio, and he’s generally rude to his colleagues, though he’s careful to be polite to his superiors. While he first seems clever and in control, Spinel’s mental state starts to unravel, as demonstrated by an unsettling incident where he bursts into intense laughter upon seeing Lucius’ powerful, ancient Arboliva.

Spinel is portrayed as someone who doesn’t care about others, readily mistreating both people and his Pokémon. Even his Umbreon, who evolved with him as a child, begins to dislike him, especially when he forces her to battle using a painful substance called Laquium. Ultimately, Umbreon leaves him due to his cruelty. After losing a major battle to the heroes, Spinel is arrested for his actions. While in prison, Umbreon visits him, but Spinel is so broken by his defeat that he doesn’t even realize she’s there. It’s currently unclear what the future holds for either Spinel or his Umbreon.

Karen and Greta of the Manga Each Have an Umbreon Like Their Game Counterparts

Inevitably, Both Umbreon Would Become “Good”

The Karen from the original Pokémon anime and games is a kind and insightful Trainer, but her version in Pokémon Adventures is quite different – she’s much more villainous. Unlike the other members of Team Rocket’s masked operatives, Karen wasn’t kidnapped as a child. Instead, she willingly joined the team out of boredom and trained alongside an Eevee that eventually became Umbreon. Though she had other Pokémon, Umbreon was her primary fighter, using its moonlight abilities to become even stronger. After the team was defeated, Karen turned her life around and became a member of the Johto Elite Four, with Umbreon remaining her trusted partner.

Karen isn’t the only famous Trainer who uses an Umbreon; Greta, a well-known Trainer from the Battle Frontier, also includes one in her team. Despite being relatively young, Greta has quickly become a respected competitor and currently holds the title of Arena Tycoon, a Frontier Brain at the Battle Arena. Her Umbreon was the first Pokémon she used in battle, even facing off against Guile, who was illegally using rented Pokémon. In a later battle against Emerald, Umbreon fought bravely, defeating Emerald’s Dusclops before ultimately being defeated by his Sudowoodo.
