Okay, so the buzz is getting pretty intense – it looks like a new Super Smash Bros. game is coming to the next Nintendo console, probably within the next couple of years! Seriously, Smash has been a huge deal for Nintendo ever since the first one dropped on the N64. But things really blew up with Melee on the GameCube – that game was legendary, and the series has been on a roll ever since. I’m super hyped if this is true!
The Super Smash Bros. series has been incredibly popular across Nintendo consoles. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was a major success on the Wii, and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U sold very well despite the console’s struggles. The series also thrived on handheld devices like the 3DS, culminating in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch, which features the biggest character lineup in the game’s history.
Super Smash Bros. Could Be Getting a New Release Soon
It looks like a new Super Smash Bros. game might be coming soon! According to gaming insider Kiwi Talkz, we can expect updates on several franchises—including Grand Theft Auto (with GTA 6 releasing in November), Metroid (rumored to have a new 2D game in development), and Zelda (with a big Ocarina of Time remake potentially arriving this year and a movie planned for 2027)—within the next year or two. Kiwi Talkz specifically mentioned Super Smash Bros., suggesting a new installment is also on the way within that timeframe.

Kiwi Talkz explained he didn’t mean upcoming games would all be completely new titles. He suggested they could be spin-offs, updated versions, or additions to the Nintendo Switch Online service. Specifically, if this applies to Super Smash Bros., we might finally see the original N64 game added to Nintendo Switch Online, as was rumored a long time ago. And with Nintendo now adding GameCube games to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack – potentially on a future Switch console – it’s likely that Super Smash Bros. Melee could also be released at some point.
Okay, so I’m really hoping this recent hint isn’t just about a re-release on Nintendo Switch Online. That would be a letdown, honestly. But it’s starting to look like a brand new Super Smash Bros. game made specifically for the Switch 2 within the next couple of years might be a bit of a stretch. You see, Masahiro Sakurai, the director of Smash Bros., just announced Kirby Air Riders is coming out on the Switch 2 at the end of 2025, and it would be incredibly quick to follow that up with a whole new Smash Bros. game so soon.
Looking at how long it’s taken to release new Super Smash Bros. games, a delay until 2028 or later would create the biggest gap ever. The time between releases has varied – two years between the first game and Melee, seven between Melee and Brawl, six between Brawl and the Wii U/3DS versions, and four between those and Ultimate. It’s tough to predict what a Super Smash Bros. game for the Switch 2 would even look like. Ultimate already had so much content, so the Switch 2 version might just be an updated edition of that game. Only time will tell what Nintendo does.
