Okay, so Nintendo just announced some news that’s a bit of a bummer for those of us hoping to get a Switch 2. It’s going to cost $50 more than we expected here in the US! And it’s not just us – Japan, Canada, and Europe are also seeing a price increase. Honestly, I’m expecting other places, like South Africa, to get hit with a price hike soon too. It’s a little disappointing, but hopefully the new console will be worth it!
Nintendo is increasing the price of its Switch 2 consoles in the US, Canada, and Europe starting September 1st. The price will go up earlier in Japan, on May 25th. We’re still waiting to find out how much prices will increase in South Africa and will share updates as soon as we have them.
Here’s how the price of the Nintendo Switch 2 will change (showing the old price and the new price):
- US: $449.99 > $499.99
- Canada: $629.99 > $679.99
- Japan: ¥49,980 > ¥59,980
- Europe: €469.99 > €499.99
Recent increases in the price of DRAM memory are probably the reason for these price jumps. Despite this, Nintendo managed to keep up with demand for its console since it launched in June 2025. By November 2025, over 10 million units had been sold, with Mario Kart World being the most popular exclusive game. This made it the fastest-selling console ever, although sales did slow down during the last holiday season, likely because there weren’t enough new, must-have games available.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond came out in December for both Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2, but it didn’t significantly boost console sales. It wasn’t until April, with the release of Pokemon Pokopia, that the Switch 2 began to see a major increase in sales – a jump of 154%.
The price increases won’t happen immediately. Players in Japan will see the new prices starting May 25th, while those in the US, Canada, and Europe will see them starting September 1st. This gives everyone a little time to buy a console at the current price before the increase.
