Goku is famously one of the most powerful characters in anime, but his growth wouldn’t have been possible without challenging opponents. Throughout both the original Dragon Ball series and Dragon Ball Super, rivals have consistently pushed Goku to surpass his limits and become even stronger. He’s always most motivated by the existence of someone who could potentially be stronger than himself.
Goku always enjoys finding fighters who are more powerful than he is, and this motivates him to improve. Throughout Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, he became stronger than all of his opponents. However, Dragon Ball Super introduced a much larger universe with even stronger rivals. Now, especially after Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, Goku has several opponents who are significantly more powerful than him, which pushes him to train harder and eventually aims to exceed the power of Beerus.
10. Yamcha Was the First Dragon Ball Character Who Ever Beat Goku
Yamcha is often seen as a comedic character in current Dragon Ball storylines, but he was originally a very powerful martial artist. Early in the series, he even defeated Goku in their first match, giving Goku his first-ever loss. Back then, Goku wasn’t able to fight at his best when he was hungry, and Yamcha cleverly used this to win. He would have seriously hurt Goku if Bulma hadn’t interrupted the fight.
Throughout the Pilaf Saga, Goku and Yamcha are shown as equals, and Yamcha even helps to calm down Goku when he transforms into a Great Ape. However, after Goku begins training with Master Roshi in preparation for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament, Yamcha starts to fall behind and isn’t able to regain the same level of strength. Despite this, Yamcha holds the distinction of being Goku’s first rival and the first character in Dragon Ball to ever defeat him in battle.
9. Krillin Almost Beat Goku in the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament
Goku and Krillin are best friends now, but they didn’t start out that way. They first met while training under Master Roshi to prepare for the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament. Initially, Krillin disliked Goku, but their shared training brought them closer, and they formed a strong friendship. Even as children, Goku was naturally more powerful, while Krillin excelled at strategy. By the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, Goku had become much stronger, but Krillin continued to fight with remarkable skill and intelligence.
Krillin intentionally provokes Goku into a cocky fight, hoping to seize his tail. He didn’t realize Goku had trained to control it, but if Goku hadn’t, Krillin’s skill would have given him the edge over Goku’s strength. While Krillin isn’t as powerful as Goku anymore, Goku still holds him in high regard, and Krillin was one of the first fighters chosen to represent Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power.
8. Tien Was Goku’s Right-Hand Man in Dragon Ball’s Last Two Sagas
Tien first appears as Goku’s rival during the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament, and their skills are perfectly matched. Tien actually wins the fight due to a freak accident – Goku crashes into a truck during the final moments. However, this outcome is surprisingly beneficial for both of them. Goku now believes Tien is the stronger fighter, pushing him to improve, and Tien is inspired to break away from his martial arts school and train to become even better than Goku.
During the battles against Demon King Piccolo and his son, Piccolo Jr., Tien was second in strength and importance only to Goku. While this changed quickly at the start of the Saiyan Saga, for a time, Tien was the second most important character in Dragon Ball. Goku has become much stronger since then, but Tien continues to train relentlessly, hoping to one day reach Goku’s level.
7. Hit Pushed Goku to His Absolute Limits in the Universe 6 Tournament
Hit is considered Universe 6’s second strongest fighter, after Kefla. He’s incredibly powerful on his own, and can also manipulate time. During a tournament, Hit pushed Goku to use his most powerful form, Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken, just to stay competitive. Later, Goku even sought Hit out for a unique challenge: he hired him to try and assassinate him, wanting a no-holds-barred fight where they were evenly matched.
Goku was greatly challenged by Hit in Dragon Ball Super, pushing him to become stronger, much like Beerus did in Battle of Gods. Hit revealed the incredible power of the strongest fighters in the multiverse. Before Goku mastered Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power, he and Hit were fairly evenly matched. If Jiren hadn’t defeated Hit so quickly, he could have become a major obstacle for both Goku and Universe 7.
6. Piccolo Finally Rivals Goku Again After Unlocking His Orange Form
In the original Dragon Ball series, Piccolo pushed Goku to his absolute limit, resulting in a battle so intense that Goku decided to let Piccolo live, wanting a strong competitor to push him to become even better. While Goku quickly became stronger than Piccolo in Dragon Ball Z, the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero balanced things out by giving Piccolo a powerful new transformation – Orange Piccolo.
Akira Toriyama designed Orange Piccolo to bring Piccolo’s strength back on par with Goku’s. Toyotarou has stated that Orange Piccolo and Ultra Instinct Goku are now at similar power levels. Currently in Dragon Ball, Goku views Piccolo less as a competitor and more as a close friend, largely due to Piccolo’s bond with Gohan.
5. Jiren Was Strong Enough to Beat the Ultra Instinct Out of Goku
I’ve always seen Jiren as a huge challenge for Goku, someone who really pushes him to get better. While they fought in the Tournament of Power, Goku never quite managed to overcome Jiren, particularly in the Dragon Ball Super manga. The artist, Toyotarou, actually portrays Jiren as even more powerful than he was originally, to the point where he completely dominates Goku, even after Goku unlocks Ultra Instinct.
In Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku thinks about how incredibly strong Jiren was and uses that as motivation to improve himself. The Dragon Ball Super series doesn’t usually revisit characters after their stories end, but if Jiren is similar to Goku, he’s likely training constantly and would provide a very difficult challenge in a future fight.
4. Broly is Goku’s Latest Rival & Supremely Powerful
Broly possesses an incredible natural talent, exceeding that of anyone else in the Dragon Ball universe. Despite having no actual training, he was already powerful enough to battle Super Saiyan God Goku in his normal state. When Broly transformed into a Legendary Super Saiyan, he surpassed Goku’s strength, ultimately forcing Goku and Vegeta to fuse into Gogeta just to have a fighting chance.
At the end of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, Goku is amazed by Broly’s power and invites him to train with him on Beerus’ Planet. Broly continues a trend in the Dragon Ball series, going from being an opponent of Goku’s to a training partner and rival. Currently, Broly is focused on learning to manage his anger and access his powerful Legendary Super Saiyan transformation at will.
3. Vegeta Has Beaten Goku Every Single Time They Fought
For years, Vegeta has been Goku’s biggest rival, constantly pushing him to become stronger. Interestingly, despite their long history in Dragon Ball, Goku has never truly defeated Vegeta in a fight. Vegeta won their first major battle during the Saiyan Saga, later knocked Goku out unexpectedly during the Majin Buu Saga, and ultimately achieved a clean, skill-based victory over Goku in Dragon Ball: Super Hero.
Currently, in Dragon Ball Super chapter 103, Vegeta has a small edge in power over Goku. However, this likely won’t last long. When the manga continues with the Black Frieza Saga, Goku is expected to become stronger again. Despite their rivalry, Goku and Vegeta have become close friends, a significant change from their earlier relationship in Dragon Ball Z.
2. Frieza Has Become One of Goku’s Most Dangerous Rivals
Frieza used to be Goku’s biggest enemy, but after Goku brought him back to life following the Tournament of Power, they became true rivals. Frieza is incredibly talented – he reached the same power level as Super Saiyan Blue Goku after only four months of training. This is remarkable considering he was much weaker than Super Saiyan Goku when Future Trunks defeated him.
After his defeat in the Moro arc, Frieza departs Universe 7 and dedicates himself to intense training. He discovers a Hyperbolic Time Chamber while traveling through different universes and spends ten years honing his skills. This training results in Frieza becoming the strongest mortal in Dragon Ball Super, debuting a new form known as Black Frieza. At this point, Black Frieza far surpasses Goku in power, but this only motivates Goku to continue training and eventually overcome his longtime enemy.
1. Beerus Will Always Be the Benchmark Goku Can’t Reach
Beerus acts as both a teacher and a competitor for Goku. After defeating Goku in Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods, Beerus became the standard Goku has been striving for throughout Dragon Ball Super. The upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will once again center on their competitive relationship. Before Dragon Ball Super concludes, Goku needs one last chance to fight Beerus and demonstrate his progress since achieving God Ki.
Goku has reached new heights of strength, first with Perfected Ultra Instinct during the fight with Moro, and then by combining it with his Super Saiyan transformations against Granolah. However, Beerus remains the strongest God of Destruction in existence. If Goku hopes to even compete with Beerus at full power, let alone defeat him, he’ll need to become significantly more powerful and fully master Ultra Instinct.
