Escape From Tarkov is Losing a Veteran Developer

Jean Tyulegenov, the Lead Game Designer for Escape From Tarkov, has left Battlestate Games after nine years. He was a crucial part of developing the game’s unique style during its long period of early access, and is now moving on to new opportunities.

Nikita Tyulegenov started at Battlestate Games in 2017 as a Game Designer and quickly became Lead Game Designer within just six months. During his time there, Escape From Tarkov grew in popularity and essentially created the ‘extraction shooter’ genre, now seen in games like ARC Raiders and Marathon. He played a key role in finally releasing the full 1.0 version of the game in November 2025, after it had been in development for eight years.

Escape From Tarkov’s Lead Game Designer Leaves

Tyulegenov announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he’s leaving Battlestate Games after nine years as Lead Game Designer for Escape From Tarkov. He described the game’s development as challenging but rewarding, and noted his contributions helped make Tarkov a leading extraction shooter. He says he’s ready for a new opportunity, though he hasn’t announced his next move yet.

It was amazing to see all the support for the developer after his statement – not just from us fans, but even from people who used to work at Battlestate Games! He actually said he didn’t realize how much energy we players could give him, and that it was more refreshing than any vacation. Even though we all have our complaints about Escape From Tarkov, it’s still such a one-of-a-kind game, and it’s clear he played a huge role in making it what it is.

The recent departure of Tyulegenov is part of a growing trend of key staff leaving Battlestate Games. Dmitri Ogorodnikov and German Terekhov, both formerly of Escape From Tarkov, recently founded Nomion Games and are now working on a new shooting game called Rush is Real. While it’s not a mass departure just yet, it’s significant that several important people are choosing to leave the studio. With Escape From Tarkov finally reaching its 1.0 release last year, it’s understandable that some individuals are looking for new creative opportunities.
