Many popular action anime, or ‘shonen,’ feature characters who are skilled in using poison. These characters employ a variety of methods, from venomous snakes to specially crafted toxins that weaken opponents internally. You can find poison users in almost any major shonen series, like Naruto and Dragon Ball, where they add a unique and dangerous element to the battles.
Many shonen anime characters use poison, but some are exceptionally dangerous. Beyond the potency of their abilities, these characters are also memorable due to their power and distinct personalities. Here’s a look at some of the strongest poison users in shonen anime.
Shinobu Kocho
- Anime: Demon Slayer
Shinobu Kocho is a very popular character known for her use of poisons, largely thanks to the success of the anime Demon Slayer. As the Insect Hashira, she developed a unique fighting style because she wasn’t physically strong enough to defeat demons in the traditional way.
Shinobu Kocho fights demons using a unique Insect Breathing Style and a sword coated in deadly poison, even defeating powerful foes like Doma. While she isn’t physically the strongest of the Hashira, Shinobu compensates with her intelligence, incredible speed and flexibility, and expertise in poisons, making her a formidable and dangerous demon slayer who shouldn’t be taken lightly.
Gordon Agrippa
- Anime: Black Clover
Gordon Agrippa from Black Clover is a member of the Black Bulls known for his poison magic. Though he might seem scary at first, he’s actually a very kind magic knight who really wants to be friends with people.
Gordon is skilled in both poison and curse magic. He can quickly conjure a protective barrier of poisonous liquid for himself and his friends, and also attack enemies with powerful waves of poison.
Pannacotta Fugo
- Anime: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure
In the anime series JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind, Pannacotta Fugo was introduced as a clever fighter with a unique ability – a Stand that operates at close range. Though generally level-headed, Fugo has a quick temper and can become extremely aggressive when provoked, posing a threat to those around him.
Fugo’s Stand, Purple Haze, is a dangerous ability that harms both enemies and anyone nearby, including Fugo himself. It releases a fast-acting, deadly purple mist that breaks down the bodies of those caught within it in just 30 seconds, offering virtually no escape. Because of its power, Purple Haze must be used very carefully to avoid accidentally hurting allies.

Jabber Wonger
- Anime: Gachiakuta
Jabber Wonger is a recent addition to the trend of characters using poison in shonen anime. He appears in the popular anime series, Gachiakuta, where battles are fought using unique tools. Jabber Wonger’s tool is called Mankira, and he wears it as rings on all ten of his fingers.
When Jabber Wonger enters combat, his Mankira can transform into two different forms: Suppressed and Awakened. In its Suppressed form, the Mankira appears as sharp, claw-like blades on both hands, and these claws are coated with dangerous neurotoxins and poison.
Honestly, seeing the Mankira fully awaken is terrifying! It just explodes in size, becoming bigger than Jabber, and its attacks become so much more powerful and far-reaching. What’s really fascinating – and scary – is how it uses poison. It doesn’t just rely on existing toxins from plants and animals; it can actually create new ones by mixing and changing the poisons it’s already collected. It’s like a biological inventor of deadly compounds!
Sasori
- Anime: Naruto
I’ve noticed that Red-Sand Sasori, a member of the Akatsuki, has a real fondness for poison. He incorporates it into nearly all his weapons, especially his combat puppets – things like the Third Kazekage and Hiruko. It’s a key part of how he fights.
Sasori’s poison is extremely dangerous, containing metals that quickly destroy healthy cells. If someone is poisoned by him, they will likely die within three days unless they receive an antidote from Sakura Haruno in time to neutralize the toxin.
Mayuri Kurotsuchi
- Anime: Bleach
Mayuri Kurotsuchi, a captain in the 12th Division of the anime Bleach, is a formidable character known for his mastery of poisons. His special ability, called Bankai, allows him to release a deadly mist that affects everything within a 200-meter range of his sword.
Kurotsuchi’s poison is incredibly dangerous; it can harm anyone nearby, even if they try to hold their breath. The only people who have the antidote are Kurotsuchi and Nemu.
Erik
- Anime: Fairy Tail
The anime Fairy Tail includes Erik, a strong character who specializes in poison and was once called Cobra. He initially searched for the incredibly powerful Nirvana magic, but later evolved, showing a more nuanced personality hidden beneath his formidable skills.
I’ve been observing Erik, and his abilities are really something. He uses a special kind of magic called Dragon Slayer, which he got from a Lacrima – a small bead – taken from a Poison Dragon. It’s implanted inside him, and it lets him transform part of his arm into a dragon-like state. When he punches, kicks, or attacks, he releases bursts of incredibly potent poison. He can even breathe out a deadly poison stream, almost like a dragon’s roar.
Magellan
- Anime: One Piece
In the world of One Piece, Magellan is essentially the personification of poison. This is due to his incredibly dangerous Devil Fruit, the Doku Doku no Mi, also known as the Venom-Venom Fruit. This fruit gives him the power to both create and control various types of poison.
Magellan becomes completely immune to all poisons, but surprisingly often finds himself needing to use the restroom after consuming food laced with his own toxins. Even with this peculiar habit, he’s an incredibly powerful character in the world of One Piece, easily capable of defeating strong opponents like Luffy, and even Blackbeard and his entire pirate crew.
Lavender
- Anime: Dragon Ball
Lavender is a key member of the Trio of Danger, known for his expertise with poison. His poisons are incredibly dangerous, capable of blinding enemies and even causing severe, long-term decay. It’s hard to avoid the effects of his poison unless someone is skilled in using a ki barrier for protection.
Although Lavender’s poison doesn’t really affect Goku and Vegeta – Gohan warned them about it – Gohan himself is hit very hard by it. Lavender can fire a powerful energy blast filled with deadly poison, and it’s almost as strong as Gohan’s Kamehameha when he’s a Super Saiyan.
