Because of continued shortages, some PC gamers are now 3D printing their own Steam Controllers. Valve is working to increase availability, but some players are choosing to create their own in the meantime.
Valve revealed the newest Steam Controller in November 2025, debuting it alongside the new Steam Machine. Gamers were immediately interested. When the controller finally went on sale May 4, 2026, for $99, it quickly became popular. It sold out almost instantly, and soon after, scalpers began reselling it online for much higher prices, frustrating many players who wanted to experience Valve’s latest hardware.
Steam Controller CAD Files Lead to 3D Printed Versions
A Steam subreddit user named JustMyBanana shared a photo of a Steam Controller they 3D-printed themselves. Since they couldn’t buy an official one from Valve, they decided to make their own! The printing process took only three hours, and likely cost much less than the original $99 price tag. While it’s just a plastic shell and won’t work as a controller, it’s a neat display piece until they can get their hands on a genuine Steam Controller.

The Steam Controller’s design files became available thanks to Valve, who released them after the controller launched. They hoped this would allow creative modders to customize the gamepad, but some people are simply using the files to 3D print copies of the original shell. It’s still too soon to tell, but it will be exciting to see what new ideas and creations come from Valve making these files public.
Some people questioned the value of 3D printing a Steam Controller, seeing it as unnecessary plastic use. However, others believed it was helpful for testing how the controller feels in your hands. Because of its unusual size, this hands-on experience could be important for potential buyers. While a 3D print can show the shape, it wouldn’t accurately reflect the controller’s actual weight.

It’s no surprise people were frustrated by the limited availability of the Steam Controller. Thankfully, Valve is taking steps to fix the problem. They’ve introduced a reservation system that gives people 72 hours to buy a controller once they’ve secured a reservation. To prevent resellers from buying up all the stock, each person can only order one. Also, those who already bought a controller during the initial release won’t be able to reserve one right now, giving priority to those who missed out. Hopefully, this will quickly resolve the stock issues and everyone who wants a Steam Controller can get one.
