When you reach the canyons in Outbound, you’ll need Hardened Metal to improve your tools and repair the ferry at the dry dock. Unfortunately, the game doesn’t initially tell you how to craft it – you have to discover the necessary ingredients first. This guide will explain everything you need to know to make Hardened Metal in Outbound, allowing you to upgrade your gear and get the ferry running again.

Making Hardened Metal in Outbound Summary

  • Find Red Ore located in the northeast of the canyons biome and harvest it with your pickaxe.

How to Make Hardened Metal in Outbound

To make Hardened Metal, simply put Red Ore into your Metal Smelter – you should already have one in your camper van. You can find Red Ore in the northeast part of the canyons area. It’s a flat ore with a silver-red color, and I’ve included a picture below to help you identify it.

You can usually find Red Ore along the edges of the map, especially near the cliffs in the northeast. Simply interact with it to mine three Red Ore each time.

Red Ore reappears every 24 in-game hours, meaning you can revisit the same spots you collected it from the next day and gather more. Because each source gives you three pieces of Red Ore, it’s relatively easy to collect enough to upgrade your tools and fix the ferry’s engine.

Now that you have the Red Ore, go back to your camper van and use the Metal Smelter. Put the Red Ore inside, then turn the smelter on using the switch located in the middle of the bottom grid. Wait for the arrow to fill up – that means you’ve successfully created Hardened Metal!

What Is Hardened Metal Used for in Outbound?

You’ll need Hardened Metal to improve certain tools, like the Wrench II and Sickle III. Specifically, upgrading the wrench and having two Hardened Metal will allow you to fix the ferry motor in the dry canyon.

To fix your van’s overheating problem, you’ll need five Hardened Metal. I suggest gathering Red Ore in the northeast part of the map now, so you don’t have to go back for it later. You’ll be using a lot of it for upgrades and to continue the story.
