How to Get Clay in Outbound

In Outbound, you’ll need to build parts and upgrades to unlock new areas of the map. These require different materials, and while some are easy to find, others are hidden in specific locations. Clay is one of these harder-to-find materials – you need it to craft Casings, which are important for progressing through the mid and late game. You’ll actually see recipes that require Casings before you can even get to the area where you find clay! If you’re having trouble locating it, here’s a guide to finding clay in Outbound.

Where to Find Clay in Outbound

You’ll find clay in the canyons area, which is the third location you’ll reach in the game. Look for it at the very bottom of the canyon that runs through the center of the map – it’s the dividing line between the upper and lower areas.

To reach the canyon floor, take either the east or west road from the entrance until you find a vehicle lift. This lift will lower you down. Once you’re at the bottom, search for a pale brown and white ore – I’ve included a picture below to help you identify it.

Every piece of ‘ore’ you collect will give you one clay. It might be annoying to repeatedly stop and gather clay while driving through the canyon, but it’s definitely worth it. You’ll need a lot of clay to build the second engine upgrade, which lets you climb the steep hill and access the northern part of the area. Plus, you’ll need even more clay – two pieces per Casing – to fix the ferry’s motor at the dry dock.

Can You Farm Clay?

You can collect clay by mining all the deposits at the bottom of the canyon, then waiting until the next day. If the clay doesn’t reappear, simply travel back to the coastal area and return immediately to reset the clay locations.

As you explore this area, you’ll probably need to collect clay from the canyon floor several times. It’s a good idea to make multiple trips for clay all at once, rather than having to go back later when you’re further away from the canyon.
