You play as Kliff, a powerful warrior who relies on the Greymanes’ fearsome reputation and a steady supply of food. Battles in Crimson Desert are chaotic, with enemies attacking from everywhere, so it’s crucial to unlock and upgrade area-of-effect (AoE) skills and equipment to manage the overwhelming number of foes.
As a fan, I’m getting really hyped about the late-game in Crimson Desert! Imagine this: you’re constantly facing huge groups of enemies, knocking them off cliffs, and smashing important buildings like hospitals and barracks with powerful attacks. There are epic boss fights with tons of minions, and you’ll battle waves of different kinds of robots. Even early on, the game throws some tough challenges at you – the Karin Quarry liberation in Hernand is notoriously difficult! But don’t worry, the game gives you plenty of ways to handle it if you take your time. You slowly unlock awesome abilities, like riding a dragon into battle or piloting a massive battle mech – an ATAG – to completely control the battlefield. It sounds incredible!
Ghost of Tsushima
Name That Instills Fear Into Your Enemies
Although Ghost of Tsushima follows a familiar open-world action-adventure formula and rarely throws truly impossible battles at players, it brilliantly captures the idea of a ‘one-man army.’ The game centers on Jin Sakai, who single-handedly defends Tsushima Island from the Mongol invasion. This concept is woven throughout the story, showing Jin’s unwavering courage and increasing skill. As he becomes more formidable, his name itself strikes fear into the invaders, and players can use this fear to their advantage.
From the start of Ghost of Tsushima, I quickly found it way more effective to sneak around and take enemies down one by one, unlocking cool new skills and gear as I went. But later on, especially during the big story missions, the game throws you into massive battles where you have to charge into huge castles and forts, using everything you’ve learned to survive. Once you really lean into becoming the Ghost alongside Jin, it’s amazing – you can take on enemies in honorable samurai duels, strike from the shadows like a ninja, or combine everything you know to become a truly unstoppable force. It’s all about freeing the island and hunting down every single enemy, and it feels so good!
Just Cause 3
John Rambo’s Brother in Gaming
It seems unbelievable that one person with explosives and a wingsuit could be as dangerous as Rico Rodriguez in the Just Cause games, but that’s exactly what we have. The series started realistically, but quickly escalated the chaos and fun with each new installment, becoming a master of over-the-top action and physics-based gameplay. By the third game, Rico has become a legendary figure, easily surpassing even John Rambo – he can single-handedly spark a revolution in an entire country and destroy any army sent against him. Whether it’s a group of soldiers, a convoy of vehicles, multiple helicopters and jets, tanks, or anything else, it’s all just another day for Rico.
The missions in Just Cause 3 and Just Cause 4 are often over-the-top, unlike anything else in open-world games. One example involves Rico Rodriguez chasing a huge missile, climbing onto it, and steering it into an enemy base – wiping out soldiers, vehicles, and supplies. You can even steal fighter jets mid-flight and cause complete chaos. While not realistic, these moments are incredibly spectacular and satisfying. In comparison, Rico’s standard solo attacks on enemy bases seem simple and easy.

Dynasty Warriors 9
At Least No One Can Deny the Scope of Battles
It’s understandable that Dynasty Warriors 9 isn’t considered one of the best open-world games, but it shouldn’t be overlooked. The series is all about huge battles where you fight as a single powerful warrior, and DW9 was the first game to combine that with a truly open world version of China. While this change wasn’t entirely successful – Dynasty Warriors: Origins shows that – it does make Dynasty Warriors 9 worth considering when talking about games with open worlds.
As expected, Dynasty Warriors 9 delivers the large-scale, action-packed battles the series is known for, letting players fight hundreds of enemies in a single, connected world instead of individual levels. Players now have more freedom in how they approach combat – they can charge directly into battle, strike from above, sneak around at night, or use the environment to their advantage. However, many players feel that Dynasty Warriors 9 is just an average installment in the series, and the open world doesn’t significantly improve the core combat experience.
Cyberpunk 2077
Unstoppable Even on Death’s Door
Cyberpunk 2077 stands out as a highly adaptable open-world game, especially when it comes to combat and character customization. While you can play it as a straightforward first-person shooter with limited upgrades, you’ll get the most out of the experience by fully utilizing cyberware to enhance V’s abilities and exploring the unique netrunning system – the game’s version of magic. Embracing these options truly lets you feel like a powerful, self-sufficient force.
Once you get further into Cyberpunk 2077, you can become incredibly powerful, almost like a digital god, with the ability to drastically alter the game world. It’s possible to build a character who can clear a room full of enemies in seconds. The game lets you feel truly all-powerful through abilities like instantly disabling enemies, moving completely unseen, or even slowing down time with cybernetic enhancements. Plus, during the final mission, you can choose to go it alone, taking on the heavily guarded Arasaka Corporation headquarters and defeating the formidable Adam Smasher without any help from your allies.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows
The Mightiest Protagonist in the Series
Assassin’s Creed Shadows might be the game fans have been waiting for, largely due to the inclusion of Yasuke, a character unlike any other in the Assassin’s Creed series. Instead of trying to combine the skills of a shinobi and a samurai into one character – like in Ghost of Tsushima – Ubisoft created two separate playable characters. This works incredibly well, as Naoe and Yasuke feel very different to play, each perfectly embodying their respective fighting styles. Yasuke is a powerful warrior who can single-handedly overcome huge obstacles – he can clear out entire forts and castles, break down gates, easily defeat enemies, activate a powerful ‘rage’ mode (called Samurai Stand), and even regain health by defeating foes.
The game consistently showcases Yasuke’s incredible strength, even after players have spent hours playing as Naoe. A particularly enjoyable moment with Yasuke appears in the Claws of Awaji expansion. Here, players normally need to hunt down and defeat fourteen powerful captains across the island before challenging Tomeji. However, skilled players controlling Yasuke can bypass this and head directly to Tomeji’s castle to fight all fourteen captains at once, creating an incredibly challenging and rewarding battle – arguably one of the best in the game.
