Well, butter my biscuit and call me a stablecoin, the American Bankers Association (ABA) is having a right old hissy fit over the Clarity Act. Seems they’ve got their knickers in a twist because this crypto market bill might just let the common folk stash their dosh in stablecoins instead of letting the banks sit on it like a dragon on a hoard of gold.
Last week, the Senate Banking Committee decided to have a bit of a knees-up to discuss this potential legislation. You’d think they were planning a tea party, the way they’re carrying on.
Over the weekend, ABA President Rob Nichols (who probably has a quill pen and an inkwell on his desk for dramatic effect) sent a frantic email to his chums in the banking world. “Quick, grab your quills and parchment!” he cried, urging them to bother their senators to snip out the bits of the bill that let crypto firms offer stablecoin rewards. “We can’t have the proles getting a fair shake!” he might as well have added.
“To be clear,” he waffled on, “we want Congress to put in place digital asset rules and establish responsible guardrails for the crypto industry. But heavens forbid they let anyone earn a bit of interest without us taking a cut! The current version, though slightly less terrible than before, still doesn’t stop those pesky crypto companies from offering interest-like rewards on payment stablecoins. Without more changes, we’re convinced it’ll send bank deposits fleeing faster than a wizard at a tax audit, putting economic growth and financial stability at risk.”
On Monday, Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno gave Nichols a proper dressing down, declaring, “The banking cartel is in full panic mode. For decades, these banks have treated your deposits like their personal piggy bank, paying you peanuts while lending YOUR money out for massive profits and executive bonuses. Now they’re quaking in their boots because someone’s finally offering a fair deal.”
The new markup session for the Clarity Act is set for Thursday, May 14th. Mark your calendars, folks-it’s going to be a right old circus, and you won’t want to miss the bankers’ tantrums.
