A new independent role-playing game called Soverain: An Eternal Legend is gaining popularity on Kickstarter. It’s a tactical, turn-based RPG inspired by classics like the Fire Emblem series. While several similar pixel-art RPGs have been released recently, Soverain: An Eternal Legend has quickly resonated with backers, exceeding its original funding goal on Kickstarter.
Jonathan Brassaud, the creator of Soverain, says the game is a lifelong dream come true. He spent three years developing it on his own before establishing his studio, Tentacule Mauve. Brassaud is a veteran of the gaming industry, having previously worked on popular titles like Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Riders Republic.
Soverain: An Eternal Legend Was Funded in 12 Hours
After years of work, game developer Brassaud launched a Kickstarter campaign for his passion project, Soverain, on May 12th, hoping to raise $30,000. The campaign was incredibly successful, reaching its goal in under 24 hours and continuing to gain momentum. As of today, Soverain has over 700 backers and has raised more than $42,000. With funding from Kickstarter and Tentacule Mauve, Brassaud and his team are now planning to release Soverain by the end of 2027. The game will be available on PC, Steam Deck, and Nintendo Switch, and they may consider releasing it on other platforms later on.

- Handcrafted pixel art inspired by games like Sea of Stars
- A rich political story aimed at a mature audience and inspired by Game of Thrones
- Emergent storytelling shaped by player decisions

The developers of Soverain call it a tactical RPG, drawing inspiration from classics like Fire Emblem and Final Fantasy. The game features a rich story, detailed character development and relationships, and engaging turn-based battles. What makes Soverain unique is how battles impact the narrative and character interactions – your choices in combat and how you play can unlock new conversations and side quests.
Even before its crowdfunding campaign began, Soverain was gaining popularity with fans of tactical and classic Japanese RPGs. Over 18,000 people had already added the game to their wishlists – a fantastic achievement for a small independent game. With the campaign now proving so successful, even more people are likely to take notice.

I’ve been noticing a trend lately, and Tentacule Mauve’s popularity just proves it: we gamers love retro-inspired games! It’s awesome when a game can give you that same feeling as the classics, but with a fresh look and some cool new ideas. Speaking of that, I’m really excited about Soverain: An Eternal Legend – it seems like it’s gonna nail that sweet spot. And if you’re a big RPG fan like me, keep an eye out for Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. It’s the eighteenth game in the series and already shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of 2026 – we definitely need more well-made RPGs!
