How to Get Copper in Subnautica 2 (& What It’s Used For)

To thrive in the challenging underwater world of Subnautica 2, you’ll need to become proficient at crafting using the resources you discover on the alien planet. Whether you’re expanding your base or creating new equipment to explore further and faster, you’ll likely need Copper fairly early in the game. However, like most things in Subnautica 2, finding resources isn’t always straightforward. Here’s a guide on how to obtain Copper and some of the initial crafting recipes that require it.

How to Get Copper in Subnautica 2

You can find copper in a cave below the coral dome, which is about 30 meters east of the Lifepod.

After reaching this location, swim into the large dome and then dive down into the cave system underneath. You’ll find copper ore on the cave floor and walls – as you can see in the image below – and this is the closest source of copper to your lifepod.

Each of these smaller nodes will give you one copper.

Okay, so about copper in Subnautica 2 – don’t just look around the coral dome east of your lifepod! I actually had way better luck finding it about 130 meters east of the lifepod. You’ll know you’re in the right spot when you find this cave with a really strong current flowing out of the top – that’s where I was stocking up early game.

Okay, so after you get through that tricky underwater cave, there’s another opening right after it. Head in, and you’ll see copper ore everywhere – on the ceiling and walls. There’s even a big chunk you can just break with your hands, and it drops like, three copper ore each time! Honestly, if you need copper, this is a super easy spot to farm it once you know about it.

This cave, and others around here, can be dangerous. Watch out for plants that release poison – swimming near them will hurt you.

I also discovered copper deposits to the north, near the Old Habitat and Camp Zero landmarks. They’re about 300 to 400 meters north of your lifepod, making them a bit of a trip, but you’ll likely visit these areas anyway while completing your main goals.

What Is Copper Used for in Subnautica 2?

Copper is really useful when you first start playing Subnautica 2. You’ll need it to build parts of your base, and it’s essential for making Copper Wire, which you’ll use to craft lots of helpful items. Here are the main things you can build with Copper early in the game:

  • Mild Acid
  • Basic Battery
  • Copper Wire
  • Fabricator
  • Small Ceiling Light
