Okay, so in Subnautica 2, you gotta eat to stay alive, obviously! Food fills up your hunger bar, which is basically how many calories you’ve got. Different foods fill it up by different amounts, and the really good stuff can also heal you and even help with your thirst. It’s all about keeping those meters topped up!
This guide will help you find the best food early in the game.
In Subnautica 2, you can’t actually eat food until you unlock the Digestion Adaptation. Until then, anything you try to eat from the ocean will harm your health instead of filling you up.
Cooked Fish
| Food | Recipe | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Cooked Halfmoon |
| Cooked Harvestmoon |

| Cooked Bluemoon |
| Cooked Geordie |
You’ll find Halfmoon, Harvestmoon, Bluemoon, and Geordie fish swimming in the shallow waters close to your Lifepod at the beginning of the game. These fish gather in large groups around the coral reefs, and new ones constantly appear, so you’ll see them everywhere!
These fish are simple to catch and cook, and just four of them will completely fill your hunger. While Halfmoon, Harvestmoon, and Bluemoon can be a little difficult to catch until you get the Wakemaker or Basic Fins to help you swim faster, Geordie is incredibly easy. Unlike the other three, which swim in groups, Geordie is usually stuck to the outside of a coral dome and doesn’t move much. This makes it the easiest fish to catch and it also gives you the most food.
Oily Salad

| Oily Salad |

Once you build the Survival Multitool in Subnautica 2, you can harvest plants and creatures to obtain Fibrous Pulp. This material is easy to collect and is used to create Rubber and Oily Salad.
Early in the game, the best places to find Fibrous Pulp are Curtain Gorgons, the mushrooms that grow on coral, and Feather Kelp – the dark pink plants found inside caves. You can find lots of these near your Lifepod. Making Oily Salad is simpler than cooking fish because you don’t have to hunt, and it lets you gather a large amount of Fibrous Pulp quickly.
Threemoon Temaki
| Food | Recipe | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Threemoon Temaki x3 |
When you first start playing Subnautica 2 and want to explore, the Threemoon Temaki is the best food to use if you’re trying to conserve inventory space. It’s more efficient than basic cooked fish or Oily Salad, even though those are easier to prepare.
If you’re planning a long supply run – 400 meters or more from your base – it’s best not to carry a lot of food. You’ll want to maximize your inventory space for loot, and Threemoon Temaki is perfect for keeping your weight down while still staying fed.
