In Subnautica 2, the locked door in the Tadpole Pens requires a keycode to open. You won’t find this keycode near the Pens themselves; you’ll need to explore a deep cave to get it. Having the Tadpole and some Air Bladders will make navigating the cave much easier.
Tadpole Pens Keycode Route Summary
- Start at the Tadpole Pens entrance.
- Go south-west, staying near the ocean floor.
- At around 540m from the Lifepod, drop and enter a hole in the ocean floor.
- Descend through the cave to 236m depth, 475m from the Lifepod.
- Pass through the hole and swim to a supply crate at 310m depth.
- Interact with the object on top of the crate to get the keycode.
Where to Find the Tadpole Pens Keycode
The Tadpole Pens keycode is located about 300 meters from the facility, at a depth of 310 meters. Although you could swim the entire way, it’s much safer and easier to use a Tadpole vehicle for most of the trip. You might need to swim the final stretch, as the keycode is deeper than the Tadpole can normally go (250 meters), but the vehicle will still make the journey much less dangerous and stressful.
Eventually, your Navigation Officer Assistant (NOA) will give you directions to Zip’s black box. These directions will lead you to the location of the Tadpole Pens keycode, so it’s best to wait until you receive them before heading there.
Start at the Tadpole Pens Entrance
Begin at the entrance to the Tadpole Pens and swim southwest, staying close to the seabed. After a short distance, you’ll reach a drop-off with several holes in the ocean floor. If you’re tracking the Lifepod signal, it will be about 540 meters to your west at this point. Descend into one of the holes.
Descend Through the Cave
Continue following the cave until you’ve descended about 240 meters and are around 475 meters from the Lifepod. You’ll find an opening there, and that’s where you’ll need to briefly leave your Tadpole.
Get the Tadpole Pens Keycode
After you enter, you’ll see two black boxes and a path leading down. Keep going down until you reach a supply crate at 310 meters. When you interact with the item on top of the crate, you’ll get the keycode for the Tadpole Pens.
This last swim can be tricky because you’ll quickly run out of air if you haven’t built a Rebreather. Luckily, having Air Bladders nearby can help you stay alive long enough to grab the keycode and return to your Tadpole without drowning.
Return to the Tadpole Pens Door
Return to the Tadpole Pens and use the keycode by interacting with the button near the locked door. Once inside, scan all the objects in the room, especially the Repair Tool – be sure to scan it if you haven’t already unlocked that function.
You’ll find a ladder leading to a room containing a NOA. Interact with it and follow the conversation options to reveal a new objective on your map.
