An Abandoned PlayStation Exclusive Franchise Might Be Making a Comeback

There’s a new buzz suggesting the PlayStation game series Infamous might be coming back. It’s been more than 12 years since the last game was released by its creator, Sucker Punch Productions, but a return seems possible.

The Infamous series began in 2009 and quickly gained a following with sequels released in 2011 and 2014. While not universally praised by critics, the games were generally well-received and became a popular PlayStation franchise. The latest installment, Infamous Second Son, was a major success for the PlayStation 4, becoming one of its best-selling exclusive titles. Despite this, over twelve years have passed and no new Infamous game has been released.

Infamous Might Be Making a Comeback After Over a Decade

During a recent VGC Podcast appearance, Jordan Middler hinted that PlayStation might bring back the Infamous series. He stated there’s significant fan demand for a new Infamous game and believes another team within PlayStation is currently working on a project related to the franchise, separate from Sucker Punch Productions. Middler pointed out that it’s been 12 years since a new Infamous title, a long time for a popular PlayStation exclusive, and that gamers are likely eager to see its return.

It’s interesting to note that a possible return of the Infamous series likely wouldn’t involve Sucker Punch Productions, and that actually makes a lot of sense. Since moving past Infamous, the studio has achieved significant success with the highly praised Ghost of Tsushima and its sequel, Ghost of Yotei. It seems much more probable they’ll continue focusing on that franchise rather than revisiting Infamous, which naturally raises questions about which studio might take on a potential revival.

Like all rumors, this information should be viewed with skepticism. Sony hasn’t confirmed anything about this project, so it’s just speculation until they make an official announcement. Sucker Punch Productions hasn’t given any hints about when we might hear more, so fans may have to be patient for a new Infamous game.

Last year, Nate Fox, the creative director at Sucker Punch Productions, mentioned he’d be interested in making another Infamous game, sparking hope for a sequel. However, recent news that Sucker Punch isn’t working on a new title suggests his comment was more of a wishful thought than a genuine announcement.
