Nintendo Switch fans worried about whether a Switch 2 would be a good purchase can be reassured: Nintendo has significant plans for its newest console. While the Switch 2 initially sold very well, even surpassing the original Switch’s early sales, recent months have seen a slowdown, with the PlayStation 5 consistently outselling it. Many potential buyers seem to be holding off, and with a price increase expected, they’re understandably hesitant about making a purchase.
Beginning September 1st, the Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $499.99, an increase from its current price of $449.99. To help soften the price increase, Nintendo will include a free game with every console, offering customers a choice between popular titles like Pokemon Pokopia, Mario Kart World, and Donkey Kong Bananza. While some fans might be hesitant about the higher price, a recent announcement should alleviate those concerns.
Nintendo Has Big Plans for the Switch 2
Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, has indicated the next Nintendo console, currently known as the Switch 2, is intended to have a long lifespan, mirroring the original Switch. Remarkably, the first Switch is still receiving exclusive games nearly nine years after its release. If Nintendo follows this pattern, we can expect the Switch 2 to be the company’s main console for at least eight years—potentially until 2033—with continued exclusive game development even after a successor console is released.

The success of any video game console depends on the quality of its games. Following the announcement of a price increase for the Switch 2, Nintendo’s Furukawa told investors the company is planning a strong selection of games to make the new console even more attractive. Nintendo has a long history of creating critically acclaimed and popular games, so it’s likely the Switch 2 will have plenty of titles players will want to buy. Several big games for the Switch 2 have already been revealed and are coming out soon.

The event is also expected to reveal Nintendo’s plans for the Switch 2 throughout the rest of the year. According to reliable sources, a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is planned as a major holiday title for the new console. Given the original game’s status as one of the highest-rated games ever, it’s expected to be a huge draw for gamers.
