So, things got pretty rough in the Sea of Thieves community recently. There were some serious accusations against a former player ambassador – stuff I won’t get into here – and Rare ended up banning them from the game, which was a good first step. But then people started saying Rare was trying to shut down conversations about it, which really upset a lot of us. Rare has now come out and said they’re committed to their community values and want to make sure everyone feels safe and respected, but it’s been a tough situation to watch unfold.
The announcement coincided with the launch of Season 19: Act 3 in Sea of Thieves, which introduced a new player-versus-player (PVP) event called Last Ship Standing. This mode pits six crews against each other in a naval battle where the last ship afloat wins. While all crews participating in Last Ship Standing will earn rewards, players will receive even greater Allegiance bonuses based on how well they perform and how long they survive. Currently, to ensure a balanced experience, only crews of one or two players can participate.
Former Sea of Thieves Ambassador Accused of Misconduct
Despite being considered one of Rare’s most successful games, Sea of Thieves is now connected to serious allegations against a former community leader. Throughout 2026, social media users shared accusations that a content creator involved in Rare’s Partner Program had inappropriate conversations and engaged in sexual misconduct with minors. This creator, known as a “Boatswain” within the Sea of Thieves community, was once highly respected. However, after being banned from the game, they deleted all their social media accounts.

After the accused creator was removed from the Sea of Thieves community, players reported that Rare attempted to silence conversations about the issue on social media. On May 14th, Rare released a statement addressing the accusations, explaining that they violated the community’s values. The company announced it’s updating its procedures and policies to better protect player safety and has removed the Boatswain role from its creator program. Rare encouraged anyone who witnessed or experienced inappropriate behavior to report it to customer support, and thanked players for their ongoing support of the game.
Sea of Thieves Players Remain Unsatisfied After Rare’s Response
Honestly, the reaction to Rare’s statement about the Boatswain program on the Sea of Thieves subreddit was pretty harsh. A lot of us felt like their letter was more about looking good than actually addressing the issue, and others were upset it took them so long to say anything. I even saw someone claim Rare used Microsoft’s Copilot AI to write the whole thing, which, if true, would be pretty wild.

Some Sea of Thieves players have stopped playing the game to protest how Rare handled the recent issues with a community ambassador. While Sea of Thieves has successfully turned things around after a difficult start and become a leading live-service game, it’s unclear how Rare will move forward from this situation.
