Capcom has identified Dead Rising as a key franchise in its plans for the future, alongside popular series like Devil May Cry and Dragon’s Dogma. In a recent financial report, the company stated it intends to create new games, remakes, and ports for these franchises, including Dead Rising, though no specific projects have been announced yet.
This announcement is significant because Capcom has a history of following similar statements with new game releases. They previously hinted at both Mega Man and Okami during investor meetings, and both franchises got new games soon after.
The original Dead Rising game came out on Xbox 360 in 2006, and three more followed, each about three years apart. The last major game in the series, Dead Rising 4, was released in 2016. If a fifth game were to be made now, it would be the longest gap between releases in the franchise’s history – over ten years.
The series made a comeback in 2024 with Dead Rising: Deluxe Remaster, an updated version of the first game. Both fans and critics liked it, and this success likely encouraged Capcom to start planning a new direction for the franchise.
Before it was cancelled, Capcom Vancouver was working on a fifth Dead Rising game. The story would have followed Chuck Greene and his daughter Katey as they traveled to a made-up city in Mexico, looking for the drug Zombrex. They would have had to fight both zombies and a dangerous drug cartel. Unfortunately, the studio closed in 2018, and the game was never made.
A recent report from late 2025 suggests that a new Dead Rising game is in the works. It’s rumored to take place in Hollywood and feature the return of Frank West as he battles zombies on a film studio lot. While Capcom hasn’t officially confirmed the game, hints in their recent financial reports have led many fans to believe the rumors are true.
Honestly, the reaction to the news has been all over the place. I saw one person on X straight-up say “Dead Rising? Seriously? They should just leave that franchise alone after how bad Dead Rising 4 was!” But then another one replied saying how they’d been hoping for something like this for ages – it’s a real mixed bag of feelings out there.
The investor report suggests Capcom can grow its popular game franchises in several ways, including through media like movies and TV shows, licensing agreements, and arcade games – not just by releasing new games. This is a broader approach than Capcom previously outlined, where they only highlighted Devil May Cry, Ace Attorney, and Mega Man as key properties for expansion.
Capcom has proven its skill at bringing older game series back to life. The 2026 release of Resident Evil Requiem, which sold 7 million copies and was praised as one of the year’s best, is a great example. The success of Devil May Cry in 2026 further shows that Capcom’s classic games can still attract a large audience with a fresh look.
Capcom has announced a few upcoming games: Onimusha: Way of the Sword is expected to release later in 2026, followed by Mega Man: Dual Override in 2027. They’re also planning downloadable content for Resident Evil Requiem. With several gaming events happening soon, we can expect to hear more details from Capcom in the near future.
