AMC has announced that season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City will arrive on July 26, 2026. For dedicated fans who have been following Maggie and Negan’s story in New York City—and perhaps have already explored the entire Walking Dead universe, including the original comics—you might be looking for something new to enjoy. The Walking Dead video games could be just what you need to fill the time!
It’s tricky figuring out how many The Walking Dead games there are, because of all the releases on phones and online. This article focuses on the main games for consoles and PCs – there aren’t too many of those, making it a good place to start if you’re interested in playing them. The AMC TV Universe Tie-Ins Games (Perfect For Dead City Fans)
The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct
- Prequel to The Walking Dead TV show
- You get to play as Daryl
- It isn’t very good
- Digital versions were delisted about a decade ago, so your best bet is to pick up a PS3 or Xbox 360 physical copy. Fortunately, they aren’t very expensive.
If you’re a fan of The Walking Dead TV show, Survival Instinct is easy to recommend, especially since it lets you play as Daryl, voiced by Norman Reedus, with Michael Rooker reprising his role as Merle. While that alone might be enough to check it out, it’s best to go in with modest expectations – it’s likely the weakest game in the Walking Dead series. I wouldn’t call it the worst overall, simply because I haven’t played every mobile game released.
Set in Georgia immediately after a major outbreak, Survival Instinct is a challenging survival game that truly focuses on staying alive. You’ll need to carefully manage supplies, improve your vehicles, and look after other characters you encounter, all of which make the world feel realistic. However, the game’s visuals, artificial intelligence, and overall gameplay aren’t very impressive, leading to more frustration than enjoyment.
The Walking Dead: Destinies
- Based on the first four seasons of the TV show
- Make decisions to alter moments
- Readily available on modern systems like the PS5, Xbox Series, Switch, and PC (via Steam)
- It isn’t very good
Of all the games discussed, The Walking Dead: Destinies had the most promising idea. It allows players to relive iconic scenes from the early seasons of the show and explore alternate storylines through key choices. However, the game doesn’t quite live up to its potential, largely functioning as a standard action-stealth title. Players control characters like Rick and Michonne, but they all feel very similar. Like Survival Instinct before it, Destinies includes elements of immersion through resource gathering and managing the group’s camp, requiring players to maintain morale.
The Walking Dead: Destines has the feel of a game made with limited resources, and while its central concept is interesting, it’s a bit rough around the edges with noticeable bugs. However, it has a certain quirky charm, and dedicated fans of The Walking Dead might enjoy exploring the different story paths it offers.
World War Z x The Walking Dead (DLC)
- Requires World War Z as the base game
- Just came out in 2026
- Rick, Daryl, Michonne, and Negan are playable
- Three episodes
- Decent
It’s a natural fit that these two worlds are colliding, even though the 2026 release date felt a little unexpected, given how long ago World War Z came out and how The Walking Dead series already concluded. That said, this downloadable content is the best video game experience based on The Walking Dead universe, and I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who already has World War Z.
This campaign includes three episodes, or maps, and tells a new story that feels like a tribute to the entire Walking Dead series. Players can choose to play as Michonne, Rick, Daryl, or Negan – with Negan being a great fit given the ongoing Dead City storyline. In terms of gameplay, the downloadable content is very similar to World War Z, but with zombies that move at a slower pace to match the feel of the TV show. Ultimately, it’s a really enjoyable co-op zombie experience.
The Walking Dead: Onslaught
- Virtual Reality only
- Playable on PSVR besides PC
- Set between seasons 8 and 9
- Play as Rick, Daryl, Michonne, or Carol
Although World War Z x The Walking Dead is the most entertaining game released so far, The Walking Dead: Onslaught is the strongest game based on the AMC series – though that’s not a high bar. Even so, this VR game provides a fun, action-packed experience if you’re looking for thrills over a deep story.
Onslaught features a satisfying dismemberment system in combat, though the physics aren’t perfect. The story itself isn’t groundbreaking – it mainly serves fans of the show – but it’s fun to experience this part of the Walking Dead universe. Unlike other Walking Dead games, Onslaught isn’t overly difficult or frustrating, and it feels like a big-budget action game. It’s a good choice if you’re looking for a lighthearted and enjoyable experience.
The Immersion Gold Standard
The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 1 & Chapter 2: Retribution
- Virtual Reality only
- Supports most standard headsets, including Meta Quest 3s
- Essential for any survival zombie fans who have the hardware to play them
When it comes to gameplay, Saints & Sinners is easily the best Walking Dead game – and one of the best survival horror games in VR, which is saying a lot. Both chapters of the game follow the same character, known as The Tourist, as they navigate a conflict between rival groups in New Orleans. The second chapter adds another layer of danger with the introduction of a serial killer.
While the story in Saints & Sinners is fine, the game really shines because of how it plays. You can freely explore open areas, though they aren’t huge. The first-person combat feels great and realistic, demanding you use each weapon in the right way. Crafting is also key, and Chapter 2 significantly expands your options while offering more intense action.
The Walking Dead Video Game Masterpiece
The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series
- Consists of four seasons, the Michonne spin-off, and the 400 Days special episode
- Set in Robert Kirkman’s comic universe, not AMC’s
- Playable on most modern systems either natively or via backward compatibility
- The best Walking Dead game by a country mile
If you’re a fan of Dead City and want to play games connected to the TV show, there are a few options. But if you only have time for one, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series is the one to play. Although it’s actually five games combined, it feels like a brand new Walking Dead story with familiar characters, offering a slightly different take on the universe.
I have to say, even with a few dips in quality here and there, The Walking Dead: The Telltale Series is just incredible when it comes to characters, letting you really shape the story with your choices, and building a world you feel invested in. Like most Telltale games, it’s not super focused on complex gameplay – you’ll do some exploring, quick-time events, and mostly make choices through conversations. But honestly, that’s all it needs. The game makes you feel like your decisions matter, and while they don’t always have the huge impact you expect, they do lead to different paths and a story that can change in meaningful ways.
Quirky Walking Dead Spin-off Games
Bridge Constructor: The Walking Dead
- Specifically inspired by AMC’s The Walking Dead
- Available on most modern systems
- Not DLC, so standalone release
While it seems strange to combine building bridges with a zombie apocalypse, the game actually pulls it off. Players get to use characters like Daryl and Eugene to create traps that smash zombies and keep survivors safe.
The Escapists: The Walking Dead
- Set in the comic’s universe
- Rick is playable
The Escapists is a well-known indie game, and this new version tries to capture the feel of The Walking Dead. It’s a decent survival game with pixel art graphics, focusing on clever planning and escaping from difficult situations, much like a prison break.
