The Best Episode of Amazon Prime Video’s Secret Level Deserved Its Own Series

Prime Video’s Secret Level received a mixed reaction from viewers and critics. The show was an anthology series, meaning each episode took place in a different video game world. However, the quality varied greatly, and some of the creative choices made with popular games โ€“ especially Pac-Man โ€“ left fans puzzled. Despite its flaws, Secret Level did have some excellent episodes that stood out.

Even though many consider it one of the weakest episodes, Secret Level‘s take on Mega Man is well-made, creates a great mood, and is strong enough to stand on its own as a separate show. The biggest problem with Secret Level Episode 10: Mega Man: Start isn’t that it’s bad โ€“ it’s that it’s only eight minutes long. This concept is so promising, it really deserves to be expanded into a full adaptation of Capcom’s classic series.

Secret Level’s Mega Man Episode Was a Proof of Concept That Proves the Concept is Worth Pursuing

The Mega Man episode of Secret Level feels underdeveloped compared to the rest of the 15-part series, which is disappointing because it has the most promising storyline. The animation is excellent, with impressive lighting and smooth movement, and the story really feels like the beginning of a bigger saga. Essentially, Secret Level Episode 10 tells the origin story of Mega Man, focusing solely on the relationship between Rock and Dr. Light.

The episode ‘Secret Level’ demonstrates a deep appreciation for the original Mega Man games, more than any other in the series. Rock’s personality is spot-on, even showing compassion to his enemies, like Bomb Man, before defeating them. The remix of the Wily Stage 1 theme at the end is a fantastic conclusion, powerfully highlighting Mega Man’s bravery and resolve.

The Secret Level episode featuring Mega Man feels more like a promising test run or a show pilot that unfortunately never went anywhere. Out of all the episodes in Secret Level, this one is the only one with the potential and quality to be expanded into a full, compelling story. It’s frustrating to see a glimpse of what could have been a truly exceptional video game adaptation.

Archie Comics’ Mega Man is Proof the Games Can Make an Excellent Series

If you’re wondering whether a lengthy Mega Man comic series could be successful, look no further than Archie Comics’ Mega Man run. While Archie only covered the first three classic Mega Man games before the series was unfortunately cancelled after 55 issues, it remains a compelling read even today.

Archie’s Mega Man comic strikes a great balance, offering well-developed characters, a richly imagined world, and fantastic art. It feels grown-up while still capturing the fun and lightheartedness of the original Mega Man games. The Secret Level arc is a bit more serious and dramatic, but it maintains a sense of hope and avoids becoming overly dark like some other stories.

I’m really hoping Secret Level gets another season, but if it does, they have to spend more time on that Mega Man idea they introduced. Honestly, I’d even be okay with them ditching a full Secret Level season two just to make a show all about bringing a Mega Man series to life. There’s just so much awesome stuff in the Mega Man universe โ€“ amazing characters and a really cool backstory โ€“ that it could easily support a show for multiple seasons. And if itโ€™s successful, they could even expand into other series like Mega Man Z, Zero, and Legends! It would be incredible.
