According to reports, PlayStation is stopping the practice of releasing its big, exclusive PlayStation 5 games—like Ghost of Yotei and Saros—on PC. Previously, PlayStation focused on securing exclusive rights to games to drive sales of its consoles. More recently, they’ve been buying entire game studios, bringing popular franchises like God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Horizon under the PlayStation umbrella.

As a PlayStation fan, I noticed a big change around 2020. It started when Horizon Zero Dawn unexpectedly came to PC, and it felt like a turning point for PlayStation’s exclusives. Then, other huge games like Helldivers 2, God of War, and Marvel’s Spider-Man followed! Apparently, these PC releases have been incredibly successful, selling tons of copies and bringing in over a billion dollars for PlayStation. It’s cool to see more people getting to enjoy these games, even if they don’t have a PlayStation!

A new report from Bloomberg indicates Sony will stop releasing its story-driven, single-player games on PC. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, informed staff that while online multiplayer games like Marathon and Marvel Tokon will still be available on multiple platforms, games like Ghost of Yotei and Saros will be exclusive to PlayStation consoles. This decision only affects games developed by PlayStation Studios; titles Sony has secured exclusive publishing rights for, such as Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, will still be released on PC.

Okay, so it looks like PlayStation’s been having a bit of a rough time with their PC game releases – sales weren’t what they hoped for, and I think that’s why they’re starting to pull back on releasing games on both PlayStation and PC. Plus, they recently raised the price of the PlayStation consoles themselves, which is always a risky move – nobody likes paying more! Now, it seems like if you want to play their big exclusive games, you’re gonna have to buy a PlayStation. Nintendo’s always done this, keeping things exclusive to their systems, but Xbox has been going the opposite way, releasing their games everywhere. It’s a weird shift, and I’m not sure how fans are going to feel about it.

For a long time, PC gamers had to wait at least a year – and often much longer – to play popular games that first appeared on PlayStation. This was largely because PlayStation preferred players to buy a PlayStation console to experience these games right away. Putting its own hardware first meant that bringing games to PC wasn’t a major focus. Interestingly, when PlayStation games did come to PC, they often saw a surge in popularity, boosting sales and revenue.

PlayStation gamers have long requested a PC version of Saros, but it now appears this won’t happen. While some found the game challenging, many hoped a PC release would allow players to create modifications to adjust the difficulty. Given the successful PC launch of Ghost of Tsushima in 2024 and expectations for Ghost of Yotei this year, fans were optimistic. However, recent reports suggest that PlayStation may no longer release its games on PC, leaving players waiting indefinitely.
