Ugh, just heard some really disappointing news. Hasbro officially canceled the single-player Dungeons & Dragons game that Giant Skull was working on. I was actually getting pretty hyped for it – it was announced last June and was being led by the studio head, Stig Asmussen. Really bummed this one won’t be happening!
Stig Asmussen is a video game veteran who graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He began his career as a 3D artist with the game Gauntlet: Dark Legacy in 1999. He then joined Santa Monica Studio, where he became a key figure in the God of War franchise, working as lead environment artist on the first game, art director for God of War 2 and God of War: Chains of Olympus, and creative director of God of War 3 after Cory Barlog left. Most recently, Asmussen was the game director for both Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor at Respawn Entertainment.
Stig Asmussen’s Dungeons and Dragons Game Has Been Canceled
In early 2024, Stig Asmussen launched a new independent game studio called Giant Skull. Their first game, announced in June 2025 as a collaboration with Hasbro, is a large-scale, single-player action-adventure title set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons and built using Unreal Engine 5. It focuses on both engaging gameplay and a captivating story.

I just heard some really disappointing news – it looks like Giant Skull’s Dungeons & Dragons game has been officially canceled. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier reported it, and Wizards of the Coast confirmed it with this statement:
I’m always checking out new ideas as we build our games. There was one early concept from Giant Skull that we decided wasn’t the right fit for us, but honestly, I have a ton of respect for Stig Asmussen and his team. We’re still working with them on other stuff, and I really value that relationship.
Bloomberg spoke with Stig Asmussen, who indicated that Giant Skull is doing well despite the game’s cancellation, implying the studio isn’t facing major issues. It’s unknown if Giant Skull is working on any other games right now. Meanwhile, Hasbro has several games already announced and is likely developing more internally, as part of their strategy to create more games themselves.

In May 2024, Hasbro invested $1 billion in its game development studios, which included Atomic Arcade, Invoke Studios, Skeleton Key, and Archetype Entertainment. However, plans changed quickly. Skeleton Key’s horror game was canceled in February 2025, and Atomic Arcade closed down earlier this year. Archetype Entertainment is still developing its first game, Exodus, a science fiction RPG inspired by Mass Effect and created by former BioWare developers. At the Game Awards 2025, Invoke Studios revealed Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, a single-player action-adventure game set in the dark fantasy world of Dungeons & Dragons.
