As Pokémon GO nears its ten-year milestone, the creators have responded to questions about a potential sequel or a completely new Pokémon game. Launched in the summer of 2016, Pokémon GO quickly became a huge cultural success and has continued to be popular with players worldwide.
Niantic, the company behind the popular game Pokémon GO, specializes in augmented reality gaming. They’ve created other games, like those in Nintendo’s Pikmin series, but none have been as successful. Recently, Scopely bought Niantic and Pokémon GO, but the same team is still working on the game.
Will Pokemon GO Get a Sequel?
Ed Wu, formerly a senior leader at Niantic for Pokemon GO and now president of games at Scopely, doesn’t believe a sequel to Pokemon GO is a good idea. In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, he explained that creating a sequel would likely be the ‘wrong move.’ He pointed out the risks, such as dividing the existing player base. Given the challenges faced by Overwatch 2, one of the few successful live-service sequels, Wu seems keen to avoid a similar situation.

Our games have built a large community because people can enjoy them anywhere and while experiencing the world around them. Because of this, making a direct sequel that splits the community doesn’t feel right. When we create something new, it needs to be a fresh approach, but still focus on bringing people together to explore and discover.
Niantic and The Pokémon Company have built a solid partnership over the past ten years. Pokémon GO has been good for the Pokémon brand, and it’s a great way for new fans to get into the franchise. Although it’s not a traditional Pokémon game, Pokémon GO connects with services like Pokémon Home and recent titles like Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Changing the successful formula of Pokémon GO would be risky, potentially upsetting existing players. The game is constantly evolving with new features and is very different from its original release. There’s no need to complicate things by releasing a completely new version.
Although a direct follow-up to the game isn’t planned, the developer is considering creating a new Pokemon game entirely. What that game would look like is uncertain, but Niantic would need to develop something original that differs from the successful features of Pokemon GO. Right now, the best course of action is to keep improving the existing game to keep players engaged and attract new ones.

It looks like Pokemon GO has exciting plans for the future! This summer, Pokemon GO Fest 2026 will offer all players—even those who don’t buy a ticket—special in-game content like better chances of finding Shiny Pokemon and unique research focused on the Mythical Pokemon Zeraora. This is a great way for longtime fans to celebrate the game’s tenth anniversary and could also bring back players who haven’t played in a while. Because Pokemon GO has such a large and dedicated player base, it doesn’t need a completely new game to stay fresh and engaging.
