I was completely shocked to see the announcement today! Warhorse Studios, known for creating some of the best role-playing games ever, revealed they’re working on an RPG set in Middle-earth, like the world of Lord of the Rings, and a new adventure in the Kingdom Come series. While I was especially surprised about the Middle-earth game—especially since they previously denied rumors about it—I was thrilled, though not entirely shocked, to hear about another Kingdom Come title. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is one of my favorite game series, so I’ve already mentally pre-ordered the next installment.
Warhorse, the studio behind the game, intentionally didn’t title their next project Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, though fans have been calling it that online – and understandably so. We’ve only known the story of Henry of Skalitz within the world of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, making it hard to picture anything else. However, Warhorse is officially calling it a “new Kingdom Come adventure,” suggesting it will expand beyond the events of Deliverance and explore uncharted territory. I think that’s a more exciting direction than simply making a direct sequel.
“A New Kingdom Come Adventure” Implies a Future Without Henry
So, Warhorse is calling the next Kingdom Come game just a “new Kingdom Come adventure,” and honestly, I think that’s probably them being careful with what they promise. I’ve heard it’s in full development, but it’s likely still really early days. They probably don’t want to get everyone hyped up too soon, and keeping the description vague is a smart move. Plus, I’ve had a feeling for a while now that we won’t be seeing Deliverance 3. I think they’re planning a different subtitle for this one, and there’s a good reason behind that decision.

The following contains spoilers for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Even as a dedicated fan, it’s clear Henry’s story has reached its conclusion with Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. The sequel wrapped up all the plot threads introduced in the first game, culminating in a touching scene where Henry connects with the memory of his parents and reflects on his journey. This sense of closure is further supported by statements from Warhorse and Tom McKay, the actor who plays Henry, suggesting McKay has finished recording his voice and motion capture for the character – signaling the end of Henry’s story as the studio finishes work on the game’s final DLC.
End of spoilers for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
If the reports are accurate, Henry won’t be the main character in the next Kingdom Come game. Instead of a direct sequel like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3, it seems the developers are planning a new story within the same world. This would mean a fresh protagonist and a different historical period. While a new story doesn’t automatically exclude Henry, if the studio wants to clearly distance the game from being seen as just another installment in the Deliverance series – even with a new title – it makes sense to start with a completely new character and storyline.
A Bittersweet Farewell That’s More Sweet Than It Is Bitter
The news about a new Kingdom Come adventure is exciting, and honestly, potentially better than just announcing Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3. While I like the character Henry and enjoyed the first game, I don’t necessarily want a direct sequel. I’d love to see Warhorse Studio create something completely new with a different setting and story. I’ve had a great time in medieval Bohemia, but expanding Kingdom Come into a broader universe, instead of just a series of Deliverance games, will give the developers more creative freedom.
You know, lately I’ve been thinking about what a Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3 would even be like. Honestly, while part of me craves more of the same, I think we’d end up let down. What I really want is to play as Henry again, but Warhorse proved they could create a protagonist I genuinely cared about. They could absolutely do that with someone new! That’s the tricky thing about a true sequel to Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2. It’d feel weird if they didn’t try to recapture that connection we all had with Henry, especially since Deliverance 2 gave his story a pretty perfect ending. But then the sequel risks becoming less about expanding the world and more about just… keeping Henry around for the sake of it. It sounds nice at first, but I worry it could really hold the series back from reaching its full potential.
The challenge with the new Kingdom Come is similar to the one Mass Effect faces. Mass Effect has struggled to move beyond Commander Shepard because the original games so strongly linked the universe’s identity to that single hero, their crew, and a specific time period. Kingdom Come risks the same thing if it relies too heavily on Henry as the only path forward, especially since Deliverance 2 already gave him a satisfying conclusion – a rare gift for many characters. Sometimes, the smartest move for a franchise with a great story is to leave it alone and not revisit it endlessly.
While I enjoy Henry as a character, I’m hoping Warhorse doesn’t make another Kingdom Come: Deliverance game. I’d love to see them create something completely new with a different story and world.
If Warhorse Studios is indeed heading in this direction, a fresh installment in the Kingdom Come series is likely the best possible news for fans, even though it’s hard to picture the story without Henry of Skalitz. Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 provided a satisfying conclusion to his journey, and continuing with a third Deliverance game could feel forced. Instead, moving forward with a new main character, a new title, and a different historical setting would allow Warhorse to demonstrate that the series’ strength isn’t tied to any single hero, but to the immersive and realistic world they’ve created.
