Yesterday, we shared the news that Embracer Group is dividing into two companies. The original Embracer Group will continue operating, and a new company called Fellowship Entertainment will manage popular game series like Tomb Raider, Darksiders, Dead Island, Kingdom Come Deliverance, and Metro. Now, there’s discussion about Embracer potentially bringing back some of its older, inactive franchises, such as Saints Row and Deus Ex.
So, I just read a report that Embracer Group is thinking about bringing back some old favorites! Apparently, they’re looking into reviving franchises like Deus Ex, TimeSplitters, and Red Faction. They’re even considering revisiting Saints Row, which… well, let’s just say the 2022 reboot wasn’t great and sadly led to the studio that made it, Volition, closing down. Embracer still owns those games, but nothing’s happened with them since, especially now that the original developers aren’t around anymore. Hopefully, this means we’ll see some of these classics make a comeback!
The story of TimeSplitters is sadly a difficult one. In 2021, news emerged that Free Radical Design was working to bring the TimeSplitters series back to life. However, in 2023, Embracer Group cancelled the project and shut down the studio, with the reasons remaining unclear. Footage of the unfinished game later appeared online, revealing early gameplay that resembled Fortnite.
Embracer Group faces a significant challenge in regaining the trust of gamers. Recent years have seen the company acquire many game studios and franchises, but most of these purchases haven’t led to new games or progress. This has resulted in studio closures and layoffs affecting hundreds of workers. Adding to the issues, Embracer sparked controversy by announcing its intention to use artificial intelligence in game development, a move that drew considerable criticism.
With Embracer Group now divided into two separate companies focusing on different areas, it remains to be seen whether their plans to revive older games will succeed, or if they’ll quickly cancel projects again.
