Look, as a PlayStation gamer, I’m really starting to lose faith in Sony. They announced the price for one PlayStation Plus tier, but then sneakily raised prices across all the tiers without really telling anyone. It just feels like a shady move and it’s frustrating as a fan.
So, Sony dropped some news on May 18th, 2026 – they’re raising the price of PlayStation Plus Essential starting May 20th. They’re saying it’s because of what’s happening in the market, but a lot of us fans are side-eyeing that explanation. The weird part is, it only affects new subscribers – if you’re already paying for it, you’re still good at the old price. It just feels a little off, you know?
At first, Sony only said the price of PlayStation Plus Essential would increase, leading many to believe the other subscription tiers would remain the same. However, as IGN reported, Sony had more price hikes in store, and all PlayStation Plus tiers are now more expensive.
PlayStation Plus Extra & Premium Prices Have Also Gone Up

Starting May 20, 2026, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscriptions cost more. PlayStation Plus Extra is now $16.99 monthly or $43.99 for a three-month subscription, and PlayStation Plus Premium is $19.99 a month or $54.99 for three months.
Fans are understandably upset about the price hike, and even more frustrated that Sony didn’t reveal it at the same time as the changes to PlayStation Plus Essential. It seems Sony was deliberately trying to hide the news.
As a PlayStation fan, I’ve been checking out the new Plus tiers. It looks like PlayStation Plus Extra is $16.99 a month, or you can get three months for $43.99. If you want the top-tier Premium plan, that’s $19.99 monthly, or $54.99 for a three-month subscription.
While PlayStation Plus Essential is required for online gaming, PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium go further by giving you access to a library of games, much like Xbox Game Pass. Premium takes it a step further with classic retro games and the ability to stream select PlayStation 3 titles.

With PlayStation Plus prices increasing, particularly as Xbox Game Pass offers more affordable options, many players might cancel their subscriptions. This is especially true considering the rising cost of the PlayStation 5 console. Subscribers have a limit to how much extra they’re willing to pay, and these services risk becoming too expensive for what they offer.
